Not entirely true. The South African variant is the larger worry.

And this ‘new’ UK strain is throughout Europe and the world now anyway, so keeping as many people out as possible will help.

The biggest help will be stopping the 20-25% cases from education though

As I said, I have no issue with closing the borders, it just seems like it would have been a lot more effective if done months ago.

The SA variant is a worry I agree, most places have travel restrictions from there already but obviously that won't be enough to stop it getting out into the wider world.

The experts wanted it since March. Johnson has blocked them each time.

Also, astonished Celtic were allowed to pop off to Dubai during a pandemic given the current restrictions in Scotland. Maybe they’ll be stuck there :) 🙄

Where do you get that the experts wanted to close the borders in March?

The SAGE minutes of March 23 suggested that cases arriving from abroad represented only 0.5 per cent of the total.

This turned out to be false and Neil Ferguson admitted in June that it was a surge of transmission from Spain and Italy in early March that caught out the modellers.

No recommendations were made to the government to close the airport. In fact Vallance went on the tv and said that would have little effect.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

From the meetings we had back in March where it was advised they should shut the borders and we were asked to look at the impact on the UK citizens overseas.

The impact was deemed too high, so they rejected it. Practicality over-ruled science.

Of course MPs then admitted it was a mistake in June and we should have brought in border restrictions

Who gave this advise though? Because it completely contradicts the SAGE minutes and what Whitty and Valance said at the time.

Not disagreeing with you. Just doesn't tally with what the "experts" publicly said at the time and the minutes of what were private meetings at the time.
