8pm Presser from Boris tonight on 20:47 - Jan 4 by J2BLUE | The guidelines do actually say once per day. Unbelievably. What's the point of that? That's the only bit of the guidelines i'll ignore. Unless people can give me a good reason not to go out for a couple of walks alone outdoors making an effort to give anyone coming the other way plenty of space etc. |
Yeah, read that. It fails the sensible test and people tend to ignore laws they think are stupid/pointless. Clearly unpolicable too. And remember guidelines are not laws. So I'd wait and see the legal text too as it may not make it to the legislation. That said, at the moment one bit of exercise is plenty for me due to the cold...

I guess it varies in locations, but the places I go are very sparcely populated even on sunny days. This time of year even less so.

While this is a small issue, golf has been banned again, although it is probably less likely to spread the virus than 2 people going for a walk together.

No logic in banning outdoor tennis in singles format or golf in 2s.

During the previous shutdown, I could go for a walk and cycle and not see anyone else. During T4, when I went to the local park, it was as crowded, if not more so than my usual traditional Christmas walk. People were in groups, joggers were running near to many people. Some people were trying to keep apart on small paths. But not to the same extent. It isn’t really about whether it is personally safe to go out once or twice whilst avoiding people. It is more that if enough people restrict themselves to once a day, for exercise, then, maybe less people will be in an area over a period of time. Statistically, that may help a little bit, just as statistically all the other measures may just help a little bit. It is a bit like marginal gains in sports.

I have friends who are keen golfers and they say they have seen packed courses with 4 ball groups, guys drinking together and then all jumping in a cab together at the end. It's not golf or tennis that is unsafe, it's some of the idiots who play and use it as an excuse to socialise. Idiots fecking it up for everyone else...so no option for a blanket ban to stop the idiots getting out on the course/court

As a keen golfer I wondered that but the other day when walking around the local course there were 30 odd people crowded on the first tee in an obviously pre arranged get together. I would not have been happy in that mob and it’s precisely why the little golf competitions i dismally fail in were cancelled in 2020. By all means allow golf, but the clubs have to police it at risk of a fine/closure. And if they can’t, no golf. The people of this country cannot be trusted. People have spread this by ignoring the rules and because of stupid idiots 1000s have unnecessarily died. Yes, BJ and co are hopeless and have made things worse with their lack of direction/action/uselessness, but the great British public know the score and we are where we are largely thanks to them. No. Even under the strictest lockdowns you could always return home. You might have more stringent quarantine rules, but no doubt you can get back if you want

Presumably a point is that if everyone in the country went outside 3 times a day that is 3 times more people on the paths and in the parks. But I am guessing above all else it is simply a ‘signal’ measure to get into people’s skull that it is serious/different and to treat this lockdown properly.

8pm Presser from Boris tonight on 20:46 - Jan 4 by tractordownsouth | Absolute shambles yet again. Mum's been in school for almost half of the Christmas holidays trying to plan for in-person teaching, only now to be told to chuck that all down the toilet because education is going back online again. SAGE recommended this on 22nd December yet the government has taken nearly 2 weeks to act. Tories treating teachers with contempt, yet again. #WilliamsonOut |
The shadow Education secretary wanted schools to remain open. I guess Labour have contempt for teachers too?

I'm quite annoyed that Labour didn't take a side in this earlier. The contempt part is because it's just one in a long series of actions though - if you ask almost any teacher whether they were treated better between 1997 and 2010 or from 2010 until 2020, I can gurantee you they would say the former.

its winter, theres a limited amount of daylight, and gaps in the weather most days with which to get out of the house, I guarantee the majority will chose the same slot to exercise in, we can call it "lunchtime" if youd prefer to give it a name.

Depends where you live really - in Suffolk it is, if you live in a big city with limited green space and everyone using it at the same time then it's not. See the issues with the London parks in Lockdown 1 where they were rammed at certain points (or at least shown to be) It's surely not something that is going to be enforced anyway so not sure why anyone is worried

Didn’t the Spanish allocate a a time slot for each age group to exercise when they came out of their initial lockdown. More important in urban areas.
