Nominations for the alt government run by TWTD members on 13:42 - Jan 5 by Ryorry | "Britain decided they didn't have the technology to drill the oil". That'd be particularly unfortunate if it came from Thatcher with the science & business background. One of the biggest sadnesses for me re environmental issues is that our major political parties have consistently failed to invest in engineering, & in particular not looked to the future, esp re recognising the potential for renewables. |
We are a big player in petro-chemicals, and oil and gas engineering. (can't comment for back in the 80's though). Have you seen the project for the world's biggest windfarm at Dogger Bank? If not have a read it's really impressive. Its a joint-venture with other international energy firms due to the immense amount of capital required.

It's probably exactly because we have been "big players" in petro-chemicals, and oil and gas engineering that we didn't invest in renewable techs as we could & should have done - most of Cameron's cabinet members (or their families) were big shareholders, amd/or held positions in global oil/gas corps + the financial institutions that supported them.

But it is these firms that are developing the renewable energy technologies. Scotland already produces enough wind power to power (in theory 98% of its homes) and that before Dogger Bank is fully online. Don't get me wrong, they are not driven by ethical reasons, but to say the UK doesn't/didn't invest in renewable energy is not correct. The tech (not just wind) is still very much in it's infancy, and the margins are much smaller, so natural gas will still play a significant part for the foreseeable future.

Don't disagree, & I didn't say that we didn't invest at all, but what I'm saying is that we could and should have done much more, much sooner. When I lived on Orkney in the early 90s e.g., models for generating energy from tidal & *wave* movement in particular were already extant, but simply didn't get the R&D support & subsidies they could have done. J2, I have come across an exciting business and investment opportunity during discussions with a leading American entrepreneur. What Ipswich really needs, and what is guaranteed to bring prosperity to the town, is a monorail. Now hear me out. There's nothing on earth, like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail What'd I say? Monorail! What's it called? Monorail! That's right! Monorail You hear those things are awfully loud but it glides as softly as a cloud. "Is there a chance the track could bend?" Not on your life, my Lefty friend! "What about the brain-dead slobs? Monkey Alan will have a job! Was I sent here by the Devil? No, good sir, I'm on the level (and Trump is now on his way out of office anyway). Monorail! What's it called? Monorail! Once again! Monorail! So, if you would like to proceed with discussions I shall just require a small advance from the treasury of $19,000,000 to secure a meeting venue. [Post edited 5 Jan 2021 14:51]
