Trump and the way he has poisoned normal Republicans 08:28 - Jan 7 with 2570 viewsBlueRaider

I was chatting online with an American friend last night. A normally lovely older lady that I used to work with, the stuff she said was ludicrous :

'Antifa went there to cause riots, we are not accepting stolen elections'

'I'm so glad we're armed and loaded with ammo ! We do not want communism or socialism'

'Teargas tastes like freedom ! I wish i could be there'

'The Democrats control the voting machines'

Unbelievable stuff, all the things that Trump and his cronies have been spouting, the guy needs to be impeached now or have the 25th amendment applied

Its because the politicians do this. Cause the problem and then get offended when they are called out on it

If the democrats control the machines why didn't they win every state?

It's just all ridiculous. Not speaking specifically about your friend but it's bizarre that people go along with this when sloghtest piece of analysis shows it to be false.

I'm not sure anyone in the UK is entitled to question or mock people in another country for their deep seated beliefs in their version of democracy.

After all in this country we have got so used to the idea of minority governmen t that a cabal of lying, incompetent extremists can be voted in by 44% of the electorate and trumpet a 'landslide' whilst being given a mandate to deliver 'the will of the people' seemingly oblivious to the vast majority who did not vote for them.

I'm pretty sure the current government we have is far worse for 'democracy'not to mention this country and its citizens than a bit of mayhem by a mob whipped into action by their own president.

Vote rigging is far from uncommon in the USA in their rather odd system that even seems designed to discourage voting. JFK was voted in by dead people. Bush Jr by non-existent Florida people.... people as always only believe what they want to believe.

Thing is, 'normal' republicans, like 'normal' Tories have been drifting towards the far right for decades. Look who Mitt Romney had as hs running mate in 2012, FFS.

Cruz is an utterly spineless fraud. In the run-up to 2016 Trump spent weeks spouting all sorts of lies and slurs about both him and his wife and to only did he sit back and take it, he's been openly licking up to him.

He's a bit like all those 'Mick out' people who insist that the football is better under Lambert.

No matter what you think of our voting system or what has gone on here during the pandemic, our government has absolutely not been worse for democracy than what Trump has instigated over the last few months culminating in last night.

One of the sad things is that if someone described to them the basic principles of socialism - ordinary people having ownership of the means to make a living, a more equitable distribution of wealth and opportunities, etc. - they would probably be heartily in favour. It would benefit most of them, after all. Some of it is directly in line with (and was influenced by) the founding principles of the USA.

There's videos of them doing this somewhat in America. I remember watching videos of people being explained "Obamacare" without using that term and they're all for it but the second you mention the name they swing the opposite way.

I speak quite often to a friend who works in the car industry in Michigan who is surrounded by Trump supporters. He spends his day just winding them up about what 'socialist' values they do have. Most need some sort of affordable health care scheme and most are unionised. He says the disconnect between their understanding of socialism and any kind of federal intervention is remarkable.

Most are Detroit Lion fans and are unsurprisingly in full support equitable distribution of talent in the draft.

I hate "virtue signalling" as a phrase, but if there was anyone it was more appropriate to describe, it's the likes of Cruz, who have stoked the division and violence and are now taking the moral high ground on twitter.

If they actually gave a sh1t they'd have been out there with megaphones telling people to stop, but instead they hid in their bunkers.

Had a "Gabby" (one of my former colleagues) liked this....

In short it was a posting hailing 4 more years for Trump and praising the actions of the patriots.

I think, neigh hope, Gabby was taking the pish, but the entire thread was filled mainly with vile Trumpists, very few dissenters.

I wouldn’t go that far as I think Trump, his henchmen and their “militarisation” of Trump supporters is at another level.

But I agree with the gist that we shouldn’t be so satisfied with our own democracy. It doesn’t seem that long ago where opponents were being called traitors and we still have a similar ludicrous fear of the left, antifa, anti-racists or just anyone who sees a need for more equality over the need to protect more freedom.

So we’re not exactly in a glasshouse throwing stones but we’re definitely in a conservatory.

I'd say too little too late but that's rather understating it.

Not only did they allow this, their algorithms actively fuel this but they don't care. It's not what they intended but they've done nothing to try and stop it.

Quite. So many people now are so keen to toughen up and lay it all on the line to combat what they've enabled... Mainly because there's now absolutely nothing at stake and costs them nothing to do so.

Empty handwringing.
