Precisely this. Does more harm than good. Especially if he's now being forced to play ball.
The benefit would be stopping him from standing for office again. But only if they have the time to try him, which I don't think they do do they? But then they must know this, so presumably think they can. Fk knows!

Will he lose the privilege of being call 'President' Trump for the rest of his days if he was removed?
Always struck me a bit needy to have this mock titling system where they get called by their previous job if they have held office.
In Britain, soldiers above a certain rank are allowed to retain their titles (e.g. "General") after they have left the forces, if they reached the rank of Major or higher. I do remember a twit who was a partner at my first employer who insisted on being called "Captain Swetenham".

Tom Cotton is the answer. Trump in policy, but more Pence in traditional republican way.
And yes, they could go for the usual Trump route of intimidation. Apparently Ivanka was being lined up to take on Marco Rubio for the Senate seat in Florida
I was reading an article re: potential Repbulician candidates for 2024, which included Trump & various family members, & the journalist concluded a good outside bet was Tucker Carlson.

He leaves office on the 20th middle of next week is the 13th are they going to impeach a president with literally seconds left in office. Don’t give him the oxygen of a martyr or his acolytes in the senate the platform to filibuster the impeachment. It will be far more embarrassing for him to see presidents of old sitting behind Joe Biden and congratulating him on becoming president. Let Trump disappear into the dust bin of history.
Impeachment is putting him in the dustbin. Otherwise a strong possibility that he could reappear in future elections (if still alive).
Also good to force the Republicans to vote for or against impeachment.

ElderGrizzly mentioned previously they seem to think they can impeach him after the 20th anyway. Maybe that will get the 2/3 they need in the senate. You would assume the last thing the Republicans need is Trump doing a 'will I or won't I run' circus turn for the next four years just to feed his ego.

They don't need 2/3 in the Senate this time for what they need to do. That's why I think it will succeed.

It does have specific implications, tho. Impeachments cannot be pardoned. It would disbar him from another Presidential run in 2024. Also could limit what insane/vengeful things Trump may be able to do between now and the 20th.
It would effectively be shoving him in the bin and closing the lid.
From what I gather it is the reasoning to push it through at this very late stage of his presidency, and to hold his feet to fire and not let him get away with it.

As opposed to *Lady* Thatcher and *Sir* John Major, you mean?
It's not unusual in other fields for significant professional titles to be retained or (made Emeritus) in reirement, eg Professor in Academia or rank in the Amed Forces.
Personally, I like it. It gives a degree of honour and respect to eg Bush's words this week. It's "President Bush said..." rather than "Former President Bush", and retired US Presidents have (generally) only intervened sparingly and where strictly necessary, usually to support the current President.
Of course al those precedents will be thrown out of the window by Trump who seems to be setting himself up to be some kind of Jeremy Kyle phone-in personality in retirement, if stories about him setting up a tv station are to be believed.
