Usually a degree lower than under the tongue which is a better place to take it unless you have previously used the thermometer rectally.
EDIT: And it should be sterilised first - five minutes in a cup of freshly boiled water should do the trick, I believe. [Post edited 9 Jan 2021 17:15]
