Our local Primary School on 12:25 - Jan 11 by vapour_trail | I’m not sure it’s that, more that so many more people are going to work outside home than was the case last March. Nothing was open apart from the supermarkets in lockdown 1, it’s completely different this time around. |
Yep, the rules are there to be bent but I think many are taking advantage (not really judging anyone, there by the grace of god etc) The classic example are those where one parent is a genuine key worker and the other is also trying to work. Now, it’s clearly incredibly inconvenient trying to home school in those circumstances but they nonetheless should be doing so imo. The schools should be open to those who have no other option and need the ‘childcare’ in order to carry out roles key to fighting the pandemic. Not just for those who want to carry on working. Otherwise it simply won’t make a big enough difference to R.

Our local Primary School on 11:39 - Jan 11 by vapour_trail | Same at my boys primary. What is happening is that around half the kids are getting a superior educational experience to the other half. |
To be fair to my son's primary school those children attending are doing exactly the same work as those remote learning, they've all got a laptop to access the same lessons we are accessing at home. In the afternoons they are watching films and playing games supervised by the TAs. Our HT made it clear they wouldn't be setting separate work in school and children wouldn't be taught, just supervised if they attended. A few teachers caught it back in December so I think they're doing all they can to discourage kids attending.

The home schooling has moved on hugely since March. The kids now just log into Google Classroom in the morning, get their timetable and then get on with lessons (which have notes, questions and videos provided). They then log into an online lesson themselves with all the other kids in the morning from Google Classroom as well as a teacher meeting in the afternoon. They then upload their own work for the teacher to provide feedback. I'll still give them extra to do later when they have finished if needed but it's lightyears ahead of what was happening in March. The school have done exceptionally well. SB

I am sure if you could investigate you would find that the schools with the highest attendance will be the schools that provide the least home schooling .

Probably. The school has dedicated one teacher to teaching the kids in school and one to deal with home schooling per year then they swap at the end of the week. Obviously that only works if the attendance in school remains below 50% (preferably quite a bit below). SB
