Am I mad? 11:47 - Jan 11 with 2573 viewsBluefish

I have a job that I enjoy at a brilliant company but I have just applied to move to their rival. Seems bonkers in this climate but it is a big jump in pay. I have never been one to chase the money and have valued happiness more besides my current role is less pay but excellent benefits. I am however probably in my comfort zone now and this role is probably where I should be and how I should be rewarded.

I wasn't looking for the move but seems too good to ignore on paper

The biggest mistake I made (I was 24 at the time) was just ship from a job I was paid decently at, for more money elsewhere. I ended up miserable and coming back to the my original employer for less money which again was a good move for me mentally, but not financially! I hope it works out, but I always say this, stress and a miserable work environment isn't worth any kind of money. If you are happy, and you have enough money then that is the dream.

Why don't you speak to your current employer about it?
If you were to leave, it would cost them more to replace you in the long run and it may even strengthen your relationship with them.

They are German and everything is set corporate structure. They can't create new roles or deviate from pay guidelines

It's always worth applying for such opportunities, if you don't you'll always think 'what if'. If you're successful in being offered the role then you have a decision to make. If you don't get offered the position then you have lost nothing.

As said in the thread though, there's a lot to be said for a happy work / life balance.

Do it! I did the same last year, was in a job I enjoyed and could have got a promotion to boot. However I saw something online that looked perfect for me and with such good opportunities for internal promotions and how good it would look on the C.V I just had to apply. I got it and honestly so far best thing to happen I’ve brought a world of experience that they didn’t have. They knew the fraud was happening but didn’t know how it was being executed and I’ve brought that experience to them.

The main thing you should consider is the people you work with and whether the new work place would offer you the same. I have done what you are considering and found when I got to my new work place the working environment was very toxic and whilst I could do the job, and was in fact overqualified for what I was paid well for, I hated every minute of being there within days. I was offered a way back into my old company when they got in contact with me but I had already moved away from the area and it was impossible to move my family again. Up to you but chasing the dollar did not work out for me in that instance.

Did the same this time last year. I was cruising at work and they were offering me a small pay rise. The pay rise was at the top end of the scale so there would have been nowhere to go upwards in terms of money.

Saw a really good job opportunity and applied on a whim. Ended up getting it. I'm now on more money with pay increasing yearly for another 8 years until I'm at the top of my grade, free lunch, loads more holiday and I don't have to deal with mindless vandalism of equipment. Flexible hours and work from home opportunities (when not stuck in Covid times).

It was mentally very difficult for the first week as I felt hugely overwhelmed, but stuck at it and doing well now.

I work from home in either scenario regardless of lockdowns and in the new scenario the office is probably 2.5 hours away instead of 3 hours away. I have formed some really good friendships at my current place though. I do however already know a couple of people at the new one from previously working together, I have a call with one of them later to find out more.

It is a bloody tough call. If I don't do this I am probably now in a job for a long time that won't really change. If I do I see it opening further doors. Plan B was always the plan but I can firmly used to plan A lately and like it

As it happens, they've just had a major rebrand, and gone very retro with it too, very similar to their old style (a slight tweak to the typography aside).

They may be looking to recruit newly off the back of that.

They must have spent hundreds of thousands on people to come up with a new brand and someone just said "Shall we just use the old one?" Go on then...

Very clever but seems too subtle for me for great brand awareness. Will need to be heavily advertised for people to get who it is.

I expect I probably don't know much about marketing though so I will stick to my specialist subject. The failings of Paul Lambert

Will you stick to playing a single striker in the new role, or would you be prepared to swap to 4-4-2 if more suited either before a game or during it?

For me the best times I have had at work have been when I have enjoyed the culture of the organisation and had reasonable line managers. Money is irrelevant if you become unhappy.

Haha... if only I could land that kind of job, would be happy to take the pay packet for that. But no, I've had to work hard to come up with design concepts for my clients, and they've generally been more than happy with the end result.

Maybe I should try asking them what their previous design was to revert to it...

You weren’t looking for a move, yet something has prompted you to apply, presumably you haven’t been head hunted.

What would you do if your current employer, if they discovered your intention, offered you more money?

Good idea to speak to the guys who work there now tbf. Seems a better scenario than my experience that I posted. I did move on from that one and went to another company managing a manufacturing process which was similar and loved every minute so it can work out very well. I just had that previous experience and regret that I took a snap decision chasing the extra money. Extra money is a factor but it's not the most important one in my mind.

More money where I am and I would definitely stay albeit the new role has a tweak in the title than would open so many doors in the future. My company has so much structure that they can't offer me much more, the new role could be practically double
