Am I mad? 11:47 - Jan 11 with 2925 views | Bluefish | I have a job that I enjoy at a brilliant company but I have just applied to move to their rival. Seems bonkers in this climate but it is a big jump in pay. I have never been one to chase the money and have valued happiness more besides my current role is less pay but excellent benefits. I am however probably in my comfort zone now and this role is probably where I should be and how I should be rewarded. I wasn't looking for the move but seems too good to ignore on paper

I think before I go there and try it I will just declare that they are terrible at 442

Am I mad? on 13:30 - Jan 11 by Bluefish | More money where I am and I would definitely stay albeit the new role has a tweak in the title than would open so many doors in the future. My company has so much structure that they can't offer me much more, the new role could be practically double |
It's a tough one. See what the chat with the others in the potential new place says about it, and then you've got more to weigh up. If there are future opportunities that sounds it could be good. Do you know what the structure rigidity is like, in comparison with the one you're at now?

They are run very differently....largely due to not being German. This could be good but could equally could be a disaster. My company is rigid but very nice and soft to make up for it

Am I mad? on 13:28 - Jan 11 by hoppy | Haha... if only I could land that kind of job, would be happy to take the pay packet for that. But no, I've had to work hard to come up with design concepts for my clients, and they've generally been more than happy with the end result. Maybe I should try asking them what their previous design was to revert to it... |
I've seen your work and it is very good, despite me being facetious!

Views from the inside could well be quite key then. Good luck with that, and if offered it, making the right decision!

I concur, find out warts and all from current employees, a few years ago I was in a similar position and when the opportunity came I spoke with a few people I already knew working at the proposed place and the feedback wasn't great, a couple tried to sugarcoat it, but I got the gist, and thankfully I stayed where I was, which given all the people I spoke to left 6-8 months later confirmed my suspicions.

Am I mad? on 14:19 - Jan 11 with 921 views | Shineyblueknives | I'm in the same situation. I turned down a job offer before christmas as my current employer offered more money. It hasn't improved my work load and I am still getting really stressed with work. The company I turned down have gotten back in touch and offered me more money but their office is in a rubbish location to commute to. Do I turn left or stay on the right?

Am I mad? on 16:00 - Jan 11 with 886 views | bluelagos | How far are you into your career? My way of doing it was always to consider a job with respect to where it took me next. So if a new opportunity had a clear step up in a couple of years (or made one easy elsewhere) I'd go for it. Otherwise stay put. The other thing to consider is rewards which are not financial. If you love job A to do job B for an extra 20% pay but hate it is short sighted. Last one is company stability. If one company looks to have a strong stable presence and the other could be going under next year...well you know what I mean. And there is always a risk in moving. The new boss might be a complete bell end and you will be stuck with him for a while. Always worth asking why if there a vacancy and trying to verify it. If it's cos someone jumped ship cos the boss was a knob, not sure I'd want to go there.

The last paragraph is really pertinent, I got to a new job once to find the job description had changed and I’d had a new line manager instead of who I was told at time of interview and acceptance it would be. New manager didn’t understand fraud and made it perfectly clear she didn’t hire me and wouldn’t have hired me. I was more than happy to leave and not have a job to go to ( I did find one 2 days after I quit! )

"New manager didn’t understand fraud" Was it a job as a Nigerian email scammer? Guess you might need some decent guidance if new to such a role eh :-)

We all know what we need to do with certain clients.... make their logo larger or whatever their partners, neighbours dog says.

I had one request recently to make a logo smaller. I did check I'd heard correctly.

Am I mad? on 15:31 - Jan 12 with 750 views | Churchman | I would go with your instinct. My mate worked from 16 to retirement with one company. He had a really good career with them and never had a moments desire to move on for any reason. I was not made that way and like a 3rd rate footballer moved about a bit. There is no right or wrong, just what feels right for you. My general view is never move just because you are hacked off with an employer for a particular reason at a particular time or purely for money. For me, neither are good enough reasons in themselves. Good reasons might include building a CV (bigger picture, especially when younger), change because you want a new challenge, new experience, better work life balance, better company with more opportunities for progression. Whatever choice you make it’ll be the right one so commit to it with no regrets.
