Poshos always say evening instead of night in my experience. It's all 'good evening, sir, we hope you enjoyed the canapes' and it don't matter what time of night it is.

Settle an argument TWTD hive mind on 14:14 - Jan 19 with 1064 views | andytown | Depends how old you are, eg young kids say good night early. Also, evening starts when you say the greeting ‘Evening’ and ends when you say ‘Goodnight’.

Settle an argument TWTD hive mind on 14:35 - Jan 19 with 1013 views | ArnoldMoorhen | My wife and I have been married for 26 and a half years and it was only today that we realised how we think completely differently on this. Like Keno she thinks that night begins when you go to bed. I said "So when you go out and don't get to bed until 2am it's still evening at Midnight?" And she said "Yes"! I think if someone says they are going to phone in the afternoon, and they phone at 6pm, then they are in the wrong. I'd put the end of afternoon/beginning of evening as somewhere around 5 to 5.30pm. And night begins sometime between 7.30 and 8.30pm for me. I *think* I'd push both of those to the earlier time in Winter and the later time in Summer. The discussion started because I'm learning Spanish and remarked that the Spanish use tardes (afternoon) and noches (night) interchangeably for evening. The range of views is interesting. Does it change with the Seasons? Are there regional variations within the UK, and use of dialect, or work patterns dictated by shifts (and therefore meal times) in some (post) industrial areas? Do other cultures and languages relate it to Sunset? Any linguists or social anthropology students looking for a Dissertation topic?

Agreed. It has always annoyed me whenever anyone refers to 7-8pm as 'afternoon'. Technically it is but not as most people understand it.

Yes, what I meant was that if you use that greeting it must be evening, whenever it is you use it. Unless it was lunchtime, which would be silly. Similarly if you say goodnight it must be the end of the evening.
