My wife and I have been married for 26 and a half years and it was only today that we realised how we think completely differently on this.

Like Keno she thinks that night begins when you go to bed. I said "So when you go out and don't get to bed until 2am it's still evening at Midnight?" And she said "Yes"!

I think if someone says they are going to phone in the afternoon, and they phone at 6pm, then they are in the wrong. I'd put the end of afternoon/beginning of evening as somewhere around 5 to 5.30pm.

And night begins sometime between 7.30 and 8.30pm for me. I *think* I'd push both of those to the earlier time in Winter and the later time in Summer.

The discussion started because I'm learning Spanish and remarked that the Spanish use tardes (afternoon) and noches (night) interchangeably for evening.

The range of views is interesting. Does it change with the Seasons? Are there regional variations within the UK, and use of dialect, or work patterns dictated by shifts (and therefore meal times) in some (post) industrial areas? Do other cultures and languages relate it to Sunset?

Any linguists or social anthropology students looking for a Dissertation topic?

Evening 17:01-21:00
Night. 21:01-05:00
Morning 05:01-12:00
Afternoon 12:01-17:00

Alternatively evening is up to dusk and night is when it's dark this is fluid with regards to timings

??? What do you call the time between 17:00 and 17:01? You can't have four undefined minutes in a day. What kind heresy is that!?

Definitely for me associated with how light it is outside. I’d say it’s night at 8pm at the moment but not when I’m having a bbq midsummer and it’s still ‘bright as day.’
A fun fact that helps with this:
Night soil "excrement" (1770) is so called because it was removed (from cesspools, etc.) after dark.

What about the blurred lines of ‘late afternoon’ and ‘early evening’?

Night is not apart of that classification

Day = light.
Night = dark.

It doesn't cease to be evening, because it is night-time, any more than it ceases to be day-time because it is the afternoon.

Morning = sunrise to midday/noon
afternoon = midday/noon-sunset
evening = sunset-sleep

Note: If you wake up prior to the sunrise, and are going about morning activities, you awake in the early morning / the early hours.

Note, you can also be in "the early hours" by not sleeping. If you last until sunrise, you haven't broken time, you have simply pulled an "all-nighter"

Tomorrow we have
Night = 00:00-07:54
Day = 07:54-16:29
Night = 16:29-00:00

Morning = 07:54-12:00
Afternoon = 12:00-16:29
Evening = 16:29-sleep

Other bonus times include
Midday/Noon = 12:00
Midnight = 00:00/24:00

I really hope someone hasn't written this out on page two already.

Edit: Phew... You're welcome

When the sun sets, you go from evening to night. Simples.

After sunset you have twilight, which is broken down into civil, nautical, and astronomical.

Civil is when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon

Nautical is when the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon

Astronomical is when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon.

6pm is evening as I think that is the time when Thames handed over to LWT on Friday evenings.

9pm is night. I can't show my working for that.

An nteresting one is how much quicker the sun sets near the equator.

You csn literally see it moving with the naked eye. I timed it once at around 3 minutes from when the sun touched the horizon to it disappearing. Takes much longer up here.
