Looks like this pitch is an absolute belter so runs in the first innings will be key. The toss is always important in test cricket, probably even more so in the Sub-Con with the team winning batting first on pretty much every occasion due to the deteriorating pitches for the spinners.
Is it time to think about the toss in test matches to make sure away teams can't get unlucky and lose every toss in a series as well as playing in unfavourable conditions.
1st test contested toss, if away team loses they have choice (uncontested toss) in 2nd game. 3rd game contested toss again and so on.
Effectively the away team could win all the flips in a series but the home team can never win two in a row. Such a big advantage being at home, this could maybe even the balance slightly??

Given SL weren't going to collapse miserably again int he first innings this is a decent start for England. Key now will be the spinners not giving too many easy runs away like they did int he last Test. |  |
