I actually thought 22:08 - Jan 23 with 3579 viewsGuthrum

we didn't play that badly today, were slightly unfortunate to lose.

The terrible, lacklustre passing back and among the defenders has gone. We pushed them back, ran with the ball. Even created chances.

Sure, we were still quite toothless in front of goal, Dozzell's passing was rather wayward, there were costly errors (Nsiala's challenge - which I thought was a bit soft - and McGuinness sticking his leg out for that ball in) and Thomas/Nolan ought to have come on ten minutes earlier. But it wasn't as dreadful as some recent perfomances.

Little steps and all that.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Mick rarely went one up front at home in fairness and we did still get results against top teams on occasion in his last 2 years here. Things are so much worse now than they were even in the worst times under Mick, we've fallen so, so far.

Look on the bright side. At least we are not "hoofing" it now. Every cloud and all that. Plus the fact I don't think Lambert has told us to feck off yet.

We do hoof it though, look at the stats for long balls for League 1. There is no bright side right now.

I just think that there are signs from today - against a decent opponent - that it wouldn't take much to turn us into a competitive team. Unfortunately, even if everything goes right*, we may already be too far adrift for a shot at the automatics.

* And I still don't think Lambert is the man to do that. Let's see how we play against Sunderland and Crewe.

I see this more as reaching our best possible level under Lambert. You’re right, we weren’t as bad as usual, relatively competent at times even.

But we created nothing and still made basic mistakes. The football itself was largely toothless, despite the better pressing and willingness not to pass it round the back 50 times before hoofing it into a corner.

I think we should be aiming a lot higher than being a mid to edge of playoffs team in Division Three, but that’s what we looked like yesterday.

Peterborough were disappointing compared to the team that tore us apart last season.

But where are the goals going to come from? We don’t create more than 3 chances per game, and our set pieces are woeful. We are very easy to play against. There was slight encouragement with Nolan and Thomas coming on, but let’s not kid ourselves. We’ve lost five out of six at home.

That’s the issue for me. We are so toothless up front. As soon as I saw Drinan was up front I feared the worst. The OP makes some fair points about the intensity but we still don’t look like winning games and that’s the bottom line

We could score goals if we organised this team properly. Of those strikers fit, Sears running off Drinan would be a handful for plenty of defences in this division for a start.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I agree to an extent (and not a drop of booze for me this weekend).
However, I think yesterday in a way was symbolic of how things have looked during a large part of Lamberts reign.
Playing well in patches, but nothing much in the way of an end product. Then we let in a stupid goal or two.
We are so slow and sloppy in our passing at times. More often than not our team looks like a bunch of strangers.

Don’t see it personally. Drinan offers nothing bar effort. Sears is a busted flush

Indeed.

With no real goal threat we couldn’t make the ball stick in their third. We have at least moved some of the sideways passing into the opponents half.

Also, not sure what they are feeding Peterborough players but they seem to fold up like a cheap suit as soon as you touch them.

The main issue yesterday was the one that's been around for most of the season - a complete lack of a goal threat. Drinan isn't good enough, but we've made mistakes before in giving up on young strikers too soon (Rhodes, Marriott & Moore spring to mind). Please don't play Judge again as a wide attacker in a 4-3-3; let's hope Thomas - who looked lively - fulfils that role. Edwards did get on the ball more in the second half & put in some decent crosses but there was no threat in the box. Chambers remains a poor full back & he isn't going to get better.

The main positive I saw was that for once there seemed to be some sort of plan in how to press them when they had possession in their half. In recent games no one seemed to know what they should do, resulting in only one or two pressing and being easily bypassed. Yesterday the players seemed to do it in a much more coherent way which was much more effective. Perhaps they actually did something on the training ground this week! Still completely toothless going forward though.

Agreed it's much worse, wasn't comparing the overall situation, just that the setup again seems almost like a pragmatic attempt to pick up enough points to finish 14th-ish.

The centre forward is one player out of 11. Plenty of teams with underwhelming centre forwards that find a way to create a threat going forward.

I think if that game had been among the first of the season, then fair enough, the problem is we are nearly halfway through the planned season and now is not the time to be only making little steps, we need big steps now because at this rate otherwise by the time we end up with a team that can create more than 1shot on target per game, and not lose to a team who had no shots on target, the season will already be done and dusted, and we probably wont then be in the playoffs.

so sure you can say we played ok, if the level of our ambition these days is just to nullify a League One team, but the result is what counts and that result sucked big time, and the manager does himself no favours by not admitting that, and not showing he understands the fans take on losing in that way, you can praise the effort of your players all day, absolutely agree dont criticise them in public, dont knock their confidence, but Lambert should have the nous to say the result was a kick in the stomach and he knows its not acceptable, if Chambers can admit it, why cant he.

I'm just convinced there is little chance of the manager being changed at any point soon, so - for the good of the club - anything which shows some slight improvement on the current low point (down in L1, feeble, dire playing style) is welcome in my book. I'd hate to see us stuck down here for another season, let alone relegated again.

"I'm just convinced there is little chance of the manager being changed at any point soon..."

You're just playing a bit of reverse psychology aren't you, and are looking forward to being proved wrong VERY soon :)

Er, hopefully.

Not a terrible performance (yet again) and we do have some quality players at this level or even for level above. But we continue to flatter to deceive, some nice passing but the players don't seem to have a game plan in mind for where their passing game is leading to, and it never seems to have the direct aim of crossing into the box , or god forbid a shot on goal from the edge of the box (on target or not - who cares - one will go in eventually). No end game - even Ronaldo would be standing about getting frostbite with these tactics.

Level above hahahah
