Learning a second language (Greek) 09:46 - Jan 24 with 684 viewsitfcjoe

My Mum has mentioned she wants to learn Greek, she spoke it as a young child, but totally lapsed now

Has anyone had any success with the various programmes like DuoLingo.

She's got no real interest in reading and writing it, just wants to be able to speak it conversationally.

Early 60s, pretty illiterate technology wise also. Birthday at end of week so dont mind spending a bit of money on something

I'm currently learning Mandarin and I believe it's important to use various platforms.

Can get discount codes for Rosetta Stone online which makes it quite cheap. This platform you are forced into the language, like a child is forced into English. It's a good, effective way of learning as many people look to translate directly from English which doesn't always work depending on the language.

Duolingo is a great app and is free.

The main thing that has helped me has been a website called preply. I have a tutor based in China that only charges £7 per hour and is fantastic. It's all done online and we both go through the same textbook. I have a referral code so I think could both get some free lessons. You also get a lesson free to see if you like it.

Lastly a site called Tandem - it links you up with people for language exchange. For example, I'm learning Mandarin so it will link me up with Mandarin speakers learning English, so you're helping eachother out. Really good way of learning and it's free!

Duolingo is a good start point

You can get a feel for the language using the free sessions and then if you want to do more in-depth start paying for it

good luck to her!!

A couple of friends are currently using DuoLingo and are having great success. Seems to be nice, bite-sized lessons.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

There's a bloke in Ipswich who specialises in Double-Dutch. You can contact him via ITFC - he's the manager I believe.
