Later I asked my Mum what a night-watchman was, and she told me it was someone who guarded the place so that nobody could get away with anything. For several years I pictured this elderly figure, complete with lantern, sitting on the pitch on a fold-up picnic stool, making sure that the opposition didn't creep in overnight and score some sneaky runs.
