Interesting piece on vaccine effectiveness re: AZ and the South African variant 10:31 - Feb 9 with 620 viewsSteve_M

Pertinent re: the impact on mild disease not meaning that there may be protection from severe disease and also how limited (only 42 cases) the recent study was.

https://unherd.com/2021/02/how-worrying-is-the-south-africa-variant/

"Intuitively, you might think that if a vaccine doesn’t protect against mild disease, it won’t have a chance against severe disease. But that’s not how it works. “Most severe disease is a consequence of someone’s immune system not dealing with the level of viral load,” says Stephen Evans, a professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “If you drive the viral load down in someone they’re less likely to get severe disease.” It may not be enough to stop them from developing a PCR-detectable, or even a symptomatic, case of the disease, but it might stop them from ending up in hospital."

A real shame that Johnson yesterday was neither able to explain this very well and that he has very little credibility with much of the population as it is really important people don't start thinking the AZ vaccien doesn't work.

The key word here is 'might'. You can susbstitute that with 'might not'.

Nobody knows - but you can understand countries with the South African variant.... South Africa for example, or wanting to protect older people opting out of this particular unproven vaccine and plumping for one with a little bit more data behind it.

He wasn't able to explain it very well because he doesn't listen to his excellent briefings.

I haven’t seen Johnson’s comments from yesterday. But I did see JVT give a calm, scientific view on how AZ will cope with the SA variant a the 5pm daily briefing.

Surely people should be listening to the likes Whitby, JVT and Valance, in a controlled setting where they can reasonably put forward their view rather than quick soundbites from politicians with no scientific background in reply to reporters?

People should perhaps listen to scientists who are not bening paid by the government. Independent SAGE for example.

If those taking the government shilling really cared for your welfare thay might have been tempted to speak out once or twice about the chaos of the previous twelve months you'd think.... i can only recall a veiled ticking off for Cummings from JVT - by which time all faith in the lockdown and the government had been destroyed.

Come off it, Factual, youre better than that.

Unless of course you actually sit in on these briefings and therefore know that he doesnt listen and that they are excellent.

You're clutching at straws.

If you want the lowdown on briefing boris, talk to Grizzers.

The briefings are excellent. They always are.

So you’d rather listen to ‘independent sage’, a group of people who may or may not be qualified in what they are talking about but certainly have limited access to information, people who are wheeled in by the BBC to pontificate because they are called Professor and might have done something once upon a time. People who may or may not be a little bitter that they were not asked to participate.

Personally, I’d rather hear from JVT and the like. He is clear and concise. Always good at explaining complex things to idiots like me. I have seen nothing that suggests he is a government stooge. Just a person doing his best in an awful situation along with his colleagues. They are also doing shifts vaccinating.

As for Johnson, I thought he was as clear as he could be and the message wasn’t the least bit confusing. The whole point of having JVT and co on is that they can explain the complex bits. The people on SAGE are not political. They advise and I’m sure they do it as well as they can. I suspect there are a variety of scientists from different specialisms with far more information at their disposal than some sad old professor pontificating in a college or mouldering in his study.

Johnson’s crowd have made far too many mistakes in the last year, but accountability for that is for the future. For now it’s about stopping people dying prematurely and protecting people, too many of whom are doing little to protect themselves and others.
