Two sides of the Covid argument 07:29 - Feb 11 with 11795 viewsElderGrizzly

One from a privileged Tory MP who has demanded we open up, the other from an actual scientist with evidence

I honestly can’t think. Given your abusive nature I can guess the C. Haven’t a clue about the rest.

If you want to throw it out to the audience I'm sure we'd all be willing to have a crack at it?

I was going to go with 'Rarely Honest Malevolent Creep' myself.

He is the health secretary ... I think he knows more about the government’s plan to get out of this that you do, with respect.

Matt Hancock didn't know a hospital in his own constituency didn't have an A and E.

I'm surprised he can tie his own laces.

Did you get this far Paz Man,

“ However, scientists have urged caution.”

Your English comprehension needs some work.

This is your stated position “ There are two sides to it, it’s about the amount of deaths that are deemed ‘acceptable’ to enable wider freedoms. Some think this amount is higher than others.”

That isn’t what the Health Secretary is stating.

What the Health Secretary is stating is that he is hoping that medical science and appropriate measures will bring this problem down to flu levels.

He is not advocating for your position, which is, look I need muh freedoms, like having a pint, so some people need to die.

Really Paz, you must try harder.

it isn't 'just like 'flu', and it isn't just about deaths:

I made this point to you before, to no avail as per usual. Still, hope springs eternal....

It is tough, as the infection and death stats fall more momentum will be behind opening up (and some of these industries desperately need to trade), but the only reason the rates are falling is due to the rules. As soon as we open up they grow.

It makes sense to wait for the Spring weather when we can then spend the vast majority of time outside.

The flu false equivalence has been one of the most long-lived and annoying fallacies of the pandemic.

An interesting push back would be which year the flu deaths were "acceptable" as a benchmark as if we go with this year there were very few flu deaths due to the C19 restrictions stopping flu transmission. The case for things like mask wearing on public transport during the winter is pretty strong but it'll never happen in any real way because of "freedom" and "liberty" and those that did decide to do it would no doubt be criticised by those who don't.

That makes sense to me. The virus is transmitted by people so distancing is the only defence. Vaccine will help, but nobody knows to what extent yet.

Patience until the spring (say end of April?) would give a chance for the number of infected to fall to a manageable level. The testing capacity is 600k plus a day and track and trace is up over 90%, from what I’ve read. Without knowing, I suspect it needs more capacity and refinement. Vaccination in 8-10 weeks time should have reached a significant chunk of the population and more will be know about it’s impact by then.

What bothers me is enforcement at the border and in the country. With the sad mentality and lack of discipline of so many here who believe it’s somebody else’s problem, it’s going to be an ongoing factor and for me the biggest hole in the fight against this awful virus.

And yet again he hasn't answered my question about the number of people left with serious disabilities requiring long term help and support that he would deem acceptable - I am entitled to infer from that that he just doesn't't give a sh*t. Nice.
