What if we got promoted in 1996-97 when we should have gone up? We'd have had a young Wright, Vaughan, Scowcoft, Dyer, Tarricco and Petta in the Premier League. We could have potentially still signed Venus and Holland who'd have been great signings anyway and we would have likely nabbed Kevin Phillips too.

I'd bet on us having stayed up and the whole history of the club would have been very different. Just getting those extra years in the top flight out of Wright, Holland and Scowcroft would have made such a difference.

Johnno wasn't as good as Kevin Phillips would have been. Johnno really struggled in the Premiership.

Kevin Phillips wouldn't necessarily have been a target for us had we gone up. I think if your main supporting argument for going up that season rather than a couple of years when we were much better is that we might have signed Kevin Phillips, it's a pretty flimsy argument.
