I can see the argument for opening things up a bit. With no vaccine I get the speed and brake, speed and brake method. However with the vaccine here and hopefully a relatively decent solution in sight I really don't see why they don't wait an extra month. Although a month for kids is a long time. It's very difficult. On balance I think I would double lock until April. Whitty is a funny one. For a chief medical officer he always looks quite ill.

I think realistically, with schools, you want to have the most educationally important years in - namely those in exam years and years 1-2. The rest, you'd probably want some kind of rolling rota on until there's more comprehensive vaccine cover amongst the general populace.

I wholeheartedly agree. Whatever decision is made on the re opening of schools, will have a maximum support of 50% of parents and teachers. Just glad i do not have to make the decision.

In reality, that’ll be mid April after the Easter break. My boy is really struggling now and he’s generally a positive, extrovert type. I’m sure there are kids doing much worse than him. My wife is a keyworker now having recently taken a role in the nhs. We’ve been told by the head that we can’t access a school place because we both wfh at present. He’s still left to his own devices most of the time as we are both in meetings all day long. If the schools aren’t opening on 8 March, I’m going to challenge the head very hard. I get that prioritisation is required but the bubble isn’t full currently, there are places available unused, and I’ll be pushing for the boy to go back in at least part time. It’s doing considerable longer term damage in my view.

I don't know what years 1 - 2 are as the school years have all gone to cock since I graced my school. I am more worried about the very young kids at primary than any others. Actually I get every argument from all sides, I end up changing my mind daily. It's an impossible situation.

The head at my boys school (my missus is a governer there), has said they recognised the biggest impact as having been on year 5 when the kids returned in Sept. I’m sure people will have differing views on this all over the place though.

Yeah but Whitty isn't living in a high rise council flat in Tottenham with three kids and a vacant dad.

My 14 year old daughter is struggling. Like everyone else she has missed six months of education. My 18 year old daughter has paid tuition fees for a full year at the University of West London, plus 2/4 accommodation. She's been back here since just before Christmas and her whole block were put into isolation in October. The whole thing has soured her experience so she is quitting the course and looking to start from scratch at a Uni closer to home.

Of course. But all you have in the op are his opposition as reported in the guardian quoting education sources. There’s plenty with skin in the game right there.

No, some of Johnson’s cabinet are leaking this to brief against him and try and get a change of course before Monday. Right now it appears the CRG are winning the ‘argument’

How is it? Johnson is ignoring his advisers again. We’ve seen the evidence in our daily work in the last 12 months on borders and it looks like we are on schools now

I feel for you. The tuition fees are little short of scandalous.

Johnson ignoring Whitty again on 20:45 - Feb 19 with 1331 views | Trequartista | The idea that a Government should follow the science, doesn't actually mean they should do everything the scientists suggest. Scientists only state facts from a scientific point of view. This is totally one-sided as they are only concerned with measures against Covid, they have no input on the damage any measures caused to society, so it will always be the hardest possible advice. The Government has to balance this with the damage the measures cause to a form a proportional result. Tldr; - Conclusion - differing opinions are normal.

I think it's hard to classify which year is suffering the most. I would think it would fluctuate from school to school and from child to child. As you say, lots of people will have varying views on this. SB

We have cancelled the DD on her accommodation for the next 1/4. She is stuck up here but all of her stuff is in London. Something definitely needs to be done about the tuition fees. My 14 year old last year came out as being gay. She was a very unhappy 11-13 year old until she made the decision to open up to us about her sexuality and she started to enjoy school and life in general, making friends and going out. These two lockdowns have definitely set her back mental health wise.
