Ian St John RIP 82. 10:00 - Mar 2 with 1946 viewsgainsboroughblue

Part of my growing up. That little segment on World of Sport, then Saint and Greavesie.

S & G was brilliant, albeit very Liverpool and Man Utd biased.

Oh that is sad, I remember him from the first very good/great Liverpool teams that spanned the period from 1960's to 1990's.

One of the great quotes attributed to Bill Shankly involves him:-

In answer to the question 'What would you do if Jesus came to Liverpool?' Shanks is supposed to have answered 'Move St John to inside left'

RIP Saint

And with a Tranmere bias as they showed their goals from the Friday evening.

A Saturday lunchtime programme that finished in 1992 for some reason.

I think that line was actually part of some graffiti in Liverpool. Shanks however did have some classic one liners in his time.

That's a real shame, loved their show, ISJ always seemed such a lovely bloke too, a great double act with the cheeky Greavise!

Didn't expect Jimmy to outlive him tbh.

RIP Sir Bobby

You may well be right.

Shanks was such a character that even the things that are attributed to him that he did not actually say are easy to be imagined as being spoken by him.

Me too! Always loved Saint and Greavsie on a Saturday afternoon. Would be on when I got back from football training. RIP Saint.

Ian St John tied with Idwal Robling for first place when the BBC held a competition to find an extra commentator for the 1970 World Cup. He lost on the casting vote of Sir Alf Ramsey, well known for his antipathy towards the Scots.

Met Ian St John once when me and a mate sat with him and watched the LFC v Borussia Dortmund game in a pub in Liverpool a few year back.

He was happy to chat and I reminded him that Liverpool hadn't won the league in 62 as some Suffolk outfit were the country's best team that year. He reminded me that LFC weren't in Division one that year (his first in red) as they were busy winning Division two.

He spoke very fondly and sadly of Jimmy Greaves who at the time was suffering from a bad stroke that left him unable to speak. Like a few on here, I grew up watching Saint and Greavsie, way better than Bob Wilson on Football Focus in my young opinion.

That is nice.

Checked my autograph book, I have got two signed photos of Ian St John in there. I was not sure if I had got his autograph or not but I have.

Excellent pics. Yes, I too particularly like the one of him proudly sitting in his Mark 1 Cortina.

An excellent player of his time thought he was great on Saint and Greavsie.

S&G seemed to care about football but without it being incredibly serious in the way Sky and the Premier League have, made it since. It will have dated less well in other ways but in enjoying football as a sport something has been lost.

The final picture of him and Andy Robertson, and Robertson's words, I find very touching. For all that we moan about the modern game ruined by money you can see gifted footballers across the generations showing mutual respect.

Saturday mornings consisted of watching football focus and then switching over to saint & Greavsie

I can still remember watching before the first leg of the milk cup semi final and one or both of them saying Norwich would win. I was gobsmacked at the time. No chance.
Sadly they were right.
