Makes sense in a more hygiene aware age.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

If you have an interesting credit history, it may not be all that easy. With the after-effects of losing my business and getting into financial trouble following 2009, I have found it impossible to get a credit card, for example. Just a quite basic bank account.

Plus, in a concerted attack, a number of providers might be affected simultaneously.

Fair. One of the challenger banks might be ok like Starling or Tide for a standard current account. Good to have a back up, Guthers.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Yes. Not really investigated the newer challengers, have to give them a look.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Everything's fine until the system goes down.

For example, my bank had a major software issue a couple of years ago, leaving me unable to use my card. Fortunately, I had a few quid in cash to buy the groceries I needed.

Not just technical failure, either. Wannacry and SolarWinds have shown the vulnerability of systems to attack - combined with the unwillingness of companies to invest sufficiently in protection and alert systems ("Why should we spend that much money on something which may never happen?").

I've started to carry cash with me in case card systems break down in shops, after a recent experience at a local Co-op. All the card machines went down in the shop, including the self service tills, so it was cash only until the system was back up and running. They told me about it when I went in, in the late afternoon. They said it had been out since early in the morning & didn't know when it would be fixed. They got a lot of aggro about it. Lucky there was a working cash machine outside the shop.

Would cut down hugely on tax evasion.

I think it's inevitable. I honestly can't remember the last time I used cash.

That's what we're worried about.
