Does he have any coaching experience?
Does he actually have any coaching badges?
Also, are the players going to take a new coach in his first job seriously?

I trust Paul Cook - he's obviously seen plenty in Gary to think he'll be a good coach - but on the face of it Roberts' appointment looks a bit like bringing a mate along for moral support, unless I've missed something.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Just trust the gaffer.

He's worked with him long enough to know what he can offer.

Nothing to see here.

A good chance Leam Richrardson will join at the end of the season too .

I'm sure PC sees enough in Roberts to warrant bringing him in .

I do. I'm just asking what I think are valid questions, not a dig at either of them. It's quite a plumb job for someone without experience; a job someone like Kieron would love and has worked hard to get the badges etc. for.

I'm just curious more than anything. Obviously, as you say, Cook will know what he can offer.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Look at it this way - he can't be a more ineffectual coach than the Lambert/Taylor duo.

Coaching certificates is just paperwork. Plus we have the likes of Gill etc already at the club.

Gary's personality behind the scenes is something Cook loves and maybe whilst he waits for Richardson it's nice for Cook to have some he can trust alongside him. I cant see gary going straight in and taking over sessions itll more than likely be Cook asking Gary to look at certain players whilst he does things and take notes etc

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

Cook will be judged by what his team does and to a lesser extent how he interacts with the supporters and media.

It doesn’t matter if he wants Roberts with him or King Kong. It’s all about the above.

Its a really valid question and I dont understand the downvotes.

Do we really need to just assume every new decision made is correct?

Cook himself said he has just brought him in because he is a former player here.

With a massive smile on his face.

It was clearly tongue-in-cheek.

He was player-coach at Accrington so this isn't his first coaching role.

Evans has worked with him at multiple clubs and said he is an energetic and enthusiastic character. I have seen how draining Lambert's negativity and body language has appeared. It must be a relief to the squad to have some positivity.

Paul Lambert had his coaching badges. He did them in Germany if anyone is interested. How did that work out for him?

You could apply the same to Gerrard and Lampard when they became managers.
Same with a youth player being in the first team until they actually do the job you don't know.
However Cook has known Roberts for several years so he knows his personality and what he can bring and Roberts will have seen Cook's training methods first hand so it's not a massive jump for Roberts to be on the other side of that. It's not like he's just starting with a club and manager that he doesn't know.

Jim Magilton had zero coaching badges when he was appointed manager.

As someone pointed out earlier, Lambert had an array of coaching badges.

Moral of the story is, coaching badges or no coaching badges doesn't guarantee a good coach.

I'm glad someone's actually answered the question. Good to know. And yes, you do make a valid comment about energy and enthusiasm. Cook's right when he says football clubs should be happy places.

Your first points don't quite work. Gerrard and Lampard are giants in the game - long time England internationals who have worked under some of the best coaches in the world. That's how they gain their respect.

With a youth player being in the first team... they're not instructing other players what to do. They only have to worry about themselves.

Your last point is good though, about his personality and the fact that he's worked on Cook's training methods at several different clubs.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I was just asking if he has them, I wasn't suggesting he'll be cr@p if he doesn't.

To your points - Magilton's hardly been a glowing success as a manager... and indeed Lambert's won more than he has. I'm not suggesting coaching badges guarantee a good coach - but coaches (at the level of Ipswich Town assistant manager) would usually have some experience/badges. I was just asking what Roberts has. I literally didn't know, and only one person has been able to answer re experience.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Interesting. Players will respect him as they will all know that for the last ten years Roberts has had without doubt the best left foot in the lower divisions. Whether that will help, who knows.

As for badges, they prove nothing. Some absolute berks have their badges. Personality and intelligence are all that matter.

Cook said they've worked together at several clubs over a long period, albeit as manager and player, but that means that Roberts will know exactly what he wants from people and will help get that across to the players.

I think it's valid, he may not have varied coaching experience but he does know Cook's philosophy and methods very well.

Coaching badges can follow later. If he’s seen him around clubs as a senior pro and he’s knowledgable about the game and works well with the players (especially the younger ones) and that is enough for Paul Cook then it will be fine
