Gill in, Cook out :) (n/t) on 14:52 - Mar 6 with 649 views | chrismakin | Thing is. Whilst it's a joke. We know gill has been involved in lineup and style through our recent games... he knows our players weaknesses. I'm.suprised we have gone full circle today and gone back to Lamberts 4 2 3 1 tippy tappy attempts at going forwards and when tippy tappy dont work we just hooded into no mans land

Gills team was pretty poor at Accrington There has been a real lack of tippy - we just did for 2 mins and had real joy

I dont think there has. I dont mean tippy tappy backwards but little pops across the back and with midfield but nothing really forwards Commentators even commenting on how little we have players in attacking areas etc

When a direct style works, it's called positive. When it doesn't work, it's called hoofball. When passing and retaining the ball works, it's called being a "footballing side". When it doesn't work, it's called tippy tappy, or worse. Cook only has Lambert's players, and yes, Gill is still involved. It's not surprising that we have seen some similarities with the way we sometimes played under Lambert, and it was probably asking too much with our bloated and average squad to expect 4 good results on the bounce. And once we went behind today, we had to play more directly and take more risks. But yes, a real disappointment today after a lot of optimism... [Post edited 6 Mar 2021 14:59]

Cook would have been well aware how Gillingham play. Direct, with lots of long balls & throw ins into the box. Rules 1 is compete for those & win the 2nd ball. Failed dismally to do that. Rule 2 is you beat a team like Gillingham by getting the ball down & passing it around them. Again, a dismal failure, apart from a brief spell in the latter period of the first half. Obvious at half time what we needed to try to do, but no improved intent in the 2nd half & probably more hoofball by Town. Some puzzling subs, especially Sears for Harrop just after we'd grabbed a lifeline & then we are punished at last for another misplaced, simple pass. Cook has a lot of work to do - this was almost certainly the team Gill would have picked. Anyone who hoped that with a new manager coming on on the back of 3 largely scrappy wins would see the dawning of a new era is having a reality check.

Very different things direct and hoofball Direct is into the right spaces with intent. Players running high tempo passing etc We had none of that today

A direct still is always called sh*t though no matter how you dress it up or how many wins you string together. The only people i ever see or hear appease it are those who've not played the game. No footballer wants to play long direct football. I've always thought the term "Tippy Tappy" equally ridiculous and non-sensical too. All footballers want the ball at their feet and would rather be in possession than not and there's a lot of value in possession retention even if the game does slow down in ineffective areas.
