CM options for Saturday 12:08 - Mar 17 with 2509 viewsBluefish

Who do we have?

Dozzell
Bishop
Skuse - somehow playing again after a year out
Judge - not a cm and no positional discipline
Lankester- not a cm
Gibbs - look far too young and more attack minded
Siziba - looked class in the cup at cdm but actually a wide player
Huws - seemingly retired
Hughes - what happened to him?

Not for me. Dozzell is streets ahead even though he's still in his first season in this role. I've seen nothing to suggest Woolf is any better on the ball (quite the opposite). Let's keep square pegs in square holes.

Maybe, but Wolfie has the edge when it comes to tackling and general energy.

Dozzell is non existent for too long in Downes’ usual role - he can’t tackle and he can’t hold players off. I have no idea if Woolfenden would be able to play there either but he couldn’t be much worse and it would free Dozzell up to move forward where he may be able to make the most of attributes in terms of creating.

Saying that the earliest we’ll see something radical is at Wigan; with so little time on the training pitch he’ll probably think he can’t do anything but go again with the bulk of the same players who never got off the coach at Fleetwood.

I'd hate to be PC right now, knowing you need some actual training time to work on these lads but you just haven't got any available.
I get what he means by just trying to get some smile on the faces of the players, but they do actually need some guidance, it's clear they just don't understand how they need to play for a 4 2 3 1, even a 4 4 2 would be hard enough with this bunch.

also, it's been 493 days since Dozzells last town goal, and in that time, he's had 2 assists. which both came in 1 game.

Some evidence that his low number of assists is an unfair reflection of his creativity:

He's way out in front of any other player in the squad for passes that lead to a shot as well (although, he takes set pieces, so that'll be a contributing factor).

For all the criticism of his defensive play, he actually ranks OK for the division on that as well:

He's fairly middle of the pack on tackling, I suspect because he's not the most athletic player - which is why we miss Downes (and why a fit Skuse isn't going to help much).

(When you see where every other midfielder at the club ranks on these defensive action charts, you get a real sense of exactly how daft the whole "the rest of the midfield has to cover for Dozzell" stuff really is.)

presumably Tommy, who made a handful of EFL Trophy appearances for us last year and a late substitute appearance in our FA Cup win at Lincoln last year.

He has a long-term injury and isn't expected back until next season.
