Cold hard cash. Bloke in a coffee shop the other day was staggered when i proffered a £10 note in payment for my cappuccino. All the local 'luvvies' had been previously tapping their phones at him!

Staggered at being offered cash? Doubt it. Mildly put out more likely.

There was some graffiti (now gone) by the Tacket Street car park that stated CASHLESS IS A TRAP.

I still go by that. Bitcoin for all its flaws and follow up gold rush of opportunistic GET RICH QUICK exploitation had the right idea at it's core as a bartering token free from influence by the state/banks.

Off to the Laundrette to use their mega machine. I need to wash a blanket and it won't fit in a standard machine.
Coins required.

A question for you gamblers.
How would you feel if a slot machine didn't dump a load of coin when you won but instead gave a digital readout of your winnings. I don't think it would give you the buzz that coins clattering into the pay tray would have.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

The fruity in my local does a little print out receipt that people take to the bar. People still feed plenty of money into it.

Our new bar is going to be cashless. We spent a long time deciding because it felt as though we could exclude the old and the very young but the problems with cash make it worth doing

Security risk for staff, quite isolated location
Taking to bank hassle
Staff theft potential
Fake notes

It does, but a lot of "cash" is to avoid paying taxes haha

The other day I had some work on the house done, and the guy says "give me £45 cash". I said I didn't have any cash on me, so then charges me £45+VAT for the card payment. Bit of a steep 20% charge....

Its like the people who pay for their massive shop in Aldi with £50 notes....

Can't see it for a while yet, given there is a chunk of society who don't have access to 4g phones and/or internet banking. Same for tourists who visit (when they do)

True, but let's not forget the wider reality it's not just tax but a need/right to do things behind the back of authority that can summarise a lot of cash transactions.

That can include drugs (which is a debate in itself about prohibition), sex work (which is a human rights issue discussion on it's own again), communities on local buy/sell groups, third party corporations taking a cut of sales and various other elements outside of tax.

A lot of the demand for cashless comes from big business who want your money flowing in their systems to control and set their cut (FB/Paypal/Etc) as well as government, although the two are practically the same group these days!

It would make my job as a mental health community worker an absolute nightmare. A very high percentage of people I see don't use plastic.

Also, it would impact on charities who rely on donations, homeless etc.

Cash has its place and I prefer it too, to be honest as using cards just make me lose track of what I've spent.

Eventually we will live in a cashless society. Year-on-year more people use contactless etc with the use of cash dropping.

I wouldn’t pay in large sums in cash anymore - and by large I mean anything over £100.

This is the better option if you get the right card.

The cash passport products are decent for anyone who doesn't want the hassle if they lose a card linked to their accounts.

Only works where you have a phone signal though. Plenty of places where it's not easy. Also, say you are a visitor to the UK from outside the EU. You face quite high phone charges if you are using your phone / banking apps everytime you want a coffee. Also plenty of European petrol stations that struggle with UK credit cards.

Not saying cashless won't continue to grow, it will. But I don't see cash disappearing in the next 20 years.

Look into a cash passport. Free withdrawals if you get the right one and backed by Mastercard. Avoid the Visa ones as they tend to be Visa Electron unless they've changed in the last couple of years.

Just tap the bank card instead? You seem to be looking for a problem here

Just pointing out some reasons why we won't go cashless. Practical reasons, nothing more. (The elderly and visitors)

If we can get a system that works across borders without high bank charges then great.

I usually use Caxton as it goes - but one real problem - you fill up with petrol and they block 100 euros on your card until the final amount is cleared - sometimes 2 or 3 weeks later. So I have happily put 500 Euros on the card for a holiday and my card is then declined after 5 petrol fills. Hence why for petrol, I will always use cash where ever possible.

Am not against cashless, merely pointing out it has it's limitations.

Get what you're saying but I imagine the proliferation of online "casinos" suggests that the buzz of a big win remains. And don't the FOBTs in bookies just print out a redeemable ticket these days rather than spit out hard cash?
