Had a quick look at the pic of Millwall 96 ripping up seats after we failed to get playoffs and they got relegated. Comment was done us in the car park too reading down says Ipswich was game and that a Millwall fan got stabbed. Any truth in this? Anyone around that was there?

I was on the train from Liverpool St that was delayed so that it arrived 10 mins before kick off. I don't mind admitting, I've never felt so uncomfortable in my life. That train was packed with Millwall lads. I had arrived at LS early to avoid such a situation but then the train just sat there, allowing it to fill up with every Millwall fan that arrived.

From memory no one has been stabbed at Portman Rd since those two Liverpool fans circa 1981

I remember a game round that time. A Liverpool fan was covered in blood and The North Stand singing "You got done by Ipswich". Don''t know what had happened to him.

we were in pioneer top tier that day, with about 400 other primary schools kids and dads that had been given tickets.

remember as the final whistle went all was pretty calm, then the scores were announced, when Town fans knew millwall were down a massive sarcastic "aaaahhhhhh" went up....

then a roar.... chairs and sht going towards then north stand, and churchmans. and could see through the gap into the car park where blokes were piling into each other.

I don't remember seeing any kids terrified or any parents particular worried.

We’ll be good again... one day

How did the incident resolve? Assume the Spurs fan was helped out by St John’s staff? Or maybe they weren’t geared up to help with slashed throats. Did the other Spurs fans retaliate.?

Yes the guy was given first aid by St. Johns but I don't know beyond that due to the goings on.

The Spurs fans were the aggressors, they had infiltrated the West Stand in large numbers, at half time they steamed thru the entrance under J Block and came along terrace from the corner with North Stand.

If I recall correctly the 2 away pens were rammed, so cops took the Ipswich fans around the side of the pitch to our part of North Stand. We were just behind this incident and spent the rest of the game surrounded by Spurs fans, we left before the end just in case of further issues, Town won 3-1.

I was in Upper Cobbold but that was safer than being down below.

It was a bit wild outside the Cobbold after the game.

I did get confronted by a Millwall supporter outside effing and blinding about Ipswich but that was as far as it went.

I know I made a statement to the police, at the request of the police, but I assume that they contacted all ITFC supporters that were in the Upper Cobbold.

I think some Millwall fans ended up in court but I heard no more after giving my statement of my experiences that day.

I remember that game. I was 6/7.

I vividly remember them tearing up seats and sitting in a traffic jam in the Portman Road car park as they kicked various cars and looked for fights with anyone who was around.

Put me of going to game for 2/3 years tbh.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

As far as I can recall the incident to which I refer was a case of Spurs infiltrating the West Stand and the individual defending himself... He just happened to have a Stanley knife in his pocket as he'd come straight from work.

I know nothing of Ipswich "firms" other than a wind up perpetrate by someone mid 80s

I forgot about that one.

Yes it was a Spurs fan and yes they had got in The West Stand but funnily enough the Spurs fan was from Chantry and it was part football and part personal feud - I know the bloke who did it.

They did exactly that. Oops. We took the long way back to the car to try and avoid where Millwall might be.

I’d had ‘previous’ with that lot, not least the 1978 6th round tie - they had a Wild West show on the pitch before the game, I think to try and take some of the aggression out. It didn’t go well.

I was at the game, in the North Stand with my GF, her first ever football match, what a great choice!

It kicked off big time in the car park afterwards, Millwall kicking police dogs, punches beign thrown everywhere, Millwall fans running over car bonnets chasing Ipswich fans back into town.

Scary stuff. But don't remember hearing about a stabbing.

The two who were stabbed were up towards what was the dole centre. Mark Stephenson was on a one man mission going bonkers after every game that season. It was the season after we won the Uefa Cup as I remember him going crazy against Aberdeen. It was never going to end well. He went to prison for those offences, God knows what he's doing these days.

A football ruck is one thing but the damage he was giving out was off the scale, quite sickening when I look back on it to be honest.

A friend of mine was working as a photographer at that game - he ended up regularly returning to Ipswich for court cases over the next couple of years - and he saw a Millwall fan punch a police horse.

There was definitely a court case / cases as a result of the Millwall game that was the last game of the 1995-96 season.

I was on Jury Service in April 1997, and the cases the week after my stint finished were relating to that game.
Not sure if anyone who attended that game would have been allowed to sit on that jury, but as I missed the game as I was away at uni, I would have been ok.

Don't think the Millwall supporters got near the pitch, cannot remember if they were hemmed in by police (or police and stewards) but they would have had to climb down from the Cobbold upper (yeah, I know, Catweazle and his Pompey chimes managed it onto the roof) before the drop into the Cobbold Lower and across the seats there. You might be getting that game confused with Scotland at Wembley in 1977...

Yup, he was nuts at the time, his younger brother used to come over to Chantry to hang out with a young Punk mate of mine, he was always on edge at home when he was about, hence him basically moving in with my mate and his family.

no they didnt, we were upper Cobbold as well, must have been a ticket promotion by the club as we wouldnt have chosen them normally as they were expensive.

not that we could have added anything as by the time you see coins and seats flying to the seats below, you wouldnt have seen who threw it anyway, and the stewards/police were all better placed for that stuff.

I know we left very quickly after the final whistle when it kicked off big time at their ends, and then found all the fans the police had been chucking out during the game waiting on the car park behind the Drum & monkey for us, who yeah were throwing punches, kicking at people, cars anything in range including their own supporters sometimes, I dont remember there being as many police as there would be in a game like that held today for sure.

and Im sure it was that game as we ran across the car park, one of their hooligans shouted "are you Ipswich?" and we instantly recognised the wrong answer would be to say yes so responded in our best mockney accents "nah mate" and he just carried on being a total beefcake looking for someone else to hit.

and we probably went back to the Greyhound post match.

fwiw what I remember of the actual game, it wasnt a game Town looked much like wanting to win for whatever reason, those sunday ko games they always looked a bit jaded,or maybe it was us having to wake up after a big saturday night on the town, but definitely some players were very comfortable just knocking it around for a draw., even had we won I think GD was a factor too, but there wasnt much intent to go for victory

Unpopular opinion; I quite admire Milwall’s fans. Refreshingly unfiltered and a welcome antidote to the modern day tripper breed of fan.

I was at a Millwall play off game at Wembley and it was horrible. I chatted to a Millwall fan and he said the problem was that big games brought out too many ...... day trippers

Of the actual game, Millwall played a novel 9-1-0 formation thinking that a draw would be enough for survival. From memory their rivals for relegstion had really tough games, think Pompey were away at Huddersfield would had been in the play off picture most of the season and were strong at home. The pitch was dreadful and we had a young and very raw James Scowcroft up front because of injuries. It was a terrible game, Millwall got the result they came for but other results saw them go down. And we missed out on the play offs through failing to win. Again from memory I think we made the mistake of showing the scoreline that relegated them on the scoreboard and that seemed to prompt the shower of seats.

It was strange that Ipswich did not seem too bothered about the game because a win could have got us a playoff place. I remember Scowie hitting the post but it did seem that we were almost afraid to win.

My ST sort of bordered on where the Millwall fans were although I think they were also to my right as well so I suppose that is why I got the police wanting a statement.

I remember a detective came to my house and wanted me to look at photos of Millwall fans asking if I could identify any of them as doing anything during or after the game.
