No holidays abroad really is a kick in the balls 08:55 - Mar 25 with 19909 viewsgtsb1966

I wasn't too disappointed last year but this year i feel a bit deflated by the whole thing if I'm being honest. Usually go with a few mates for a week and then have another quiet week away to relax. Obviously needs must and all that but for some reason it has really peed me off. Anyway else feel the same.

It's utterly bonkers & indefensible in countries which will still have their citizens locked down. But I guess UEFA are just keeping their fingers crossed & hoping things get better (unlikely) while some governments don't want to play Scrooge quite yet.

A couple of nations are looking like they might 'play scrooge' (well play according to the rule book); I think we can guess what the headlines in some papers and the jibes from some of our elected members of Parliament will be:

To be honest until the rest of Europe catches up with the UK on vaccines what is the point of going abroad. Britain is a great place to explore. Here comes the tough part, as long as the weather is good.

A good argument for us sending all our spare vaccines to Europe once we have done all the top 9 groups...

Get all of Europe's most vulnerable protected and it makes any travel a whole lot less dangerous (Albeit the new variant thing would still need managing) for all concerned.

(Though whether they'd actually use them is a different debate)

Is it? I'd say a better argument was sending them to poor countries with poor healthcare systems rather than thinking about our right to travel.

Truly impaired.

For sure. But parts of Europe has higher rates of CV than places like Malawi or Kenya from what I can see.

Either way - there will be more people die if we vaccinate our youths ahead of countries with high rates of CV and sod all vaccinations.

Quite right but that is what we will do. A young person living in Britain's life is more important to the government than ten people living in another country. It would be political suicide.

It's a horrible situation. I'm not saying I agree with the government. I can just see the position they are in. Another thing is we've asked the young to basically give up a year of their lives to keep the older generations safe. If we now say the older generations have been vaccinated but you can wait even longer it's not a good look. Or fair.

The EU have totally screwed this up. Surely we need to help out third world countries than than this bureaucratic nightmare.

I would think that it would be in the world's interests to get the developed nations fully vaccinated and their economies back up and running so that they can churn out the vaccine for the rest of the world.

Just because the EU have messed it up it doesn't mean we shouldn't help them.

You'll all be able to come over here. That's if Biden pulls off his aim of 200m doses in the first 100 days of his presidency.

Yeah, Blubbers isn't reluctantly accepting we can't have them, he's having them. Whilst claiming foreign holidays are no less safe than domestic ones. And then mocking others for having a more sensible approach.

No, haven't sorted a job but at least got a new (in fact better) creative partner and have built a joint website which we've been sending out to agencies and recruiters over the last week and a half. So fingers crossed. Thanks for asking!

Brexit was partially the reason I lost my last perm job!

Good stuff. Hope that all works out for you.

The situation is far bigger than this spat with the EU. Some third world countries seem capable of looking after themselves (like India* banning exports of the AZ vaccine). Bans and conflict isn't the way I'd want to secure mutual benefits, but the end result is the same in that case as they are getting vaccines intended for us. But then morally why shouldn't they, as big Pharma are exploiting low labour costs?

There's a whole issue around patents tied up with underpinning technology that's preventing other countries manufacturing the vaccines too. That's got nothing to do with the EU. The rich nations and owners of the IP and patents could do much more if they wanted. Trump was trying to make transfer of IP a condition of contracts.

If we wanted to help out developing countries we could also do that irrespective of what the EU are doing. Based on what we've done with development aid it doesn't look like helping developing countries is a priority of this government.

*Not strictly a Third World Country any more I suspect; maybe more a transitioning country.

I thought it was 100m doses and that he did that in 59 days or something?

Excellent that he's upped the amount, hopefully it'll get done.

There are discussions about a travel corridor between the US and UK apparently.

Gave a presser today, upped the target because, like you said, the first target has already been met.
