This “rubbish” group of players won 5 and drew 1 of its first 6 games 10:40 - Mar 28 with 2127 viewsGlasgowBlue

Scoring 13 goals in the process. None of those goals were scored by James Norwood.

In our last six we have won one, drawn two and lost three, scoring a total of 4 goals, three of which were scored by Norwood.

Same group of players. Pretty much the same formation. WTF has happened?

The beginning of last season and this season has shown that these “rubbish” players are capable of dominating and winning games of football. The end of last season and this are showing a team that are absolutely woeful.

It has to be a lack of bottle, attitude and desire. What else can it be?

Someone else alluded to fitness - at the start of the season it was more about quality because teams were starting at the same level, fitness wise. As the season develops, other teams can play for longer and run further, negating our apparent advantage.

Only Chambers and Dozzell should have any excuse to be knackered. The rest have all had periods out of the team due to injuries, loss of form or tactical reasons.

With the size of our squad we should be the fittest in the division.

Lambert had a losers mentality when he was here for some reason, constantly finding excuses and bemoaning the number of matches, and fixing it so we didn't play during international breaks.

Lambert instilled a culture of excuses.

This is a poor excuse.

We have a big squad and there is no reason our fitness levels should be lower.

Another part of the Lambert excuse mentality.

Some of all that is true, without doubt, but we really shouldn't overlook how easy our opening few games were this season.

Wigan didn't even have a squad after relegation and financial disaster.
Bristol Rovers continuing a run from last season that saw there hopeless manager lose his job.
Rochdale have been dreadful all season.

You get an opening few games as nice as that and you get a platform to build from, and a bit of confidence. Didn't last long though did it!

That doesn't explain several recent games/performances that should've also fallen in that 'easy' bracket if the early season ones were thought of as that, and we've been overwhelmingly poor.
Is that from cultivating a defeatist attitude?

Agree there is no excuse, but does seem to add up.

Both seasons a really good start, when all teams are building their fitness up.

Also Cook sending the players home, as the sports science would not allow for another double session.

Think from memory the two players that did the best from the blip tests were Downes & Nolan (might be wrong). Bishop's fitness has improved this season, as he is now lasting full 90 minutes - but does show we maybe do not have the stamina in the squad.

Pace is also a thing we lack, Sears and Judge both seem to have lost the legs that they once had.

You forgot the " games come thick n fast " statement. .

A busy and grueling season. Remember the little fact that we no longer partake in cup competitions with any desire. Then there is the long injury list we carry every season.

The players hear of a possible take over , and that Lambert will be leaving as a result . An overnight up turn in player effort as they want “ in “ on the action and believe the £ signs for them personally will rack up. Win 3 games .

Paul Cook is appointed ( as part of the consortium deal), why else would he turn down several championship club offers ? Cook is straight talking . Knows the game . Susses the “ quality” of this squad and says in the first 10 days .....” some will stay, some will be leaving , (there’s far too many players here), that’s football”. Suddenly training is for real, players realise there’s a manager at the club that takes no bull S. Players don’t like the new tough day at work. Resent being asked to work their sorry arses off for the first time in nearly 3 years. May have already been told they will not have their contract renewed.

Result .... wholesale “ downing of tools “( by the Tools) and a collective attitude of why should I care , I’m leaving in the summer , so arse holes to the Club, I couldn’t give a flying one anymore.

Football is a selfish industry, and being a footballer requires a great deal of determination and self belief.

Players don't down tools when their contracts are coming to an end, because they need to get another one here or elsewhere - in what will be a very difficult market

I doubt many have, firstly who would really take any of them, none of them are hardly pulling up trees, our best player this season is 35.

Secondly, there are still a whole host of other clubs in all the divisions that don't know where they will be playing next season, so one eye maybe on recruitment but certainly not putting offers on the table.

Regarding the OP, I mentioned last week I heard a whisper that Cook was shocked at the fitness levels, and this might be one of the reasons why we are struggling, along with far too many players being out of form.

Who could you honestly say is currently playing 100% of their potential? I'm struggling...

At a guess, a couple at best have something pencilled in - but football so cutthroat that no one can rest on their laurels as if a better option comes along thent hat will be it

I wouldn't might betting that it is the "difficult market" that a number of footballers (not just at Ipswich) probably don't really understand.

I suspect some serious rude awakenings for many footballers this summer.

It is common sense for someone who may or may not be unemployed as from 30th June to see what other jobs might be available but probably not many, if any, committed to anything.
