Ipswich have the best squad in League One 10:46 - Mar 28 with 3461 viewsbournemouthblue

this wasn't even true when we were first relegated

I would say it was about 6th in the league and for me the issue has always been a lack of balance

We lack pace and power through out the side. The team we started with yesterday (KVY aside) was so slow and cloggy, exactly the vision I had of bang average League One sides whenever I had seen them appearing in the FA Cup.

We have a total lack of athletes with no real agility.

Bennetts is a frustrating player but he offers us more than the motley crew we put out yesterday.

The same is true with Parrott and I think both of them improve the balance of our side if nothing else.

Dozzell and Bishop are both talented players but that's a powder puff combo in the middle of the park. We suddenly look short on options with Downes out, Skuse well off the pace, Huws a shadow of his former self and Nolan seemingly cast into the wilderness. McGavin may have done a better job in there but we can't use him either!

Norwood is the only striker who looks up to it and I like the look of Parrot but he isn't ours ultimately.

Kayden Jackson has proved to be disappointing, Sears looks a shadow of the player who McCarthy first signed, Hawkins seems to have disappeared and Drinnan looks like he is playing a league or too high.

I've no doubt Drinnan is going to work hard but he doesn't look quick enough to really make a defence sweat for me. He had a rare burst forward against someone I forget and actually looked quicker than I was expecting but that seemed to be a rare flurry where he looked up to it.

If we somehow fluked our way into the playoffs and won them, we'd need a complete squad rebuild or we could crashing back down with a similar points haul to Wycombe.

The story seems to change. For months the majority have said this is the best squad in the league and the manager is the problem. Most people wanted Paul Cook to be manager, as to the majority Lambert was the problem. Cook has now been appointed and the team is playing its worse since relegation and looks totally deflated after just a few weeks of working with him. He's come in akin to Hurst and Keane, running them ragged and you can see they are falling apart mentally. Now the fans blame the players and want more time for yet another manager.

What we have is by far and away the largest and most expensive squad in the league. Difference being, none of our players really fit into a defined shape or a first choice XI, wheras others teams' squads do. Not hard, is it?

It's a squad that should be better than it has been over the past two seasons though. My view, even last season, wasn't that it was good enough to walk the league but it should be well in contention. I agree about the imbalance, throughout the time Lambert was here it's been unwieldy and reliant on a couple of players in some positions whilst we are well covered in others.

Some of the issues are clearly of fitness and confidence even before taking into account our abysmal injury record. All of which reflects the disorganised state of the club under Evans. It's not even about the amount of money being spent on the squad but it is being spent badly because of a lack of footballing structure and managerial incompetence.

Much of that is true, although I don't think we're playing the worse since relegation. Not even close. We're a pretty tight unit, but are a little bit one dimensional pace wise and flatter to deceive. Without a goal threat we're going to struggle and anyone would have problems getting goals out of this squad (MM struggled when he didn't have either Murph or Waghorn).

Must admit though, I'm disappointed about the lack of reaction to Cook coming in. Another false dawn so far in a long history of false dawns.

There's plenty of ability in the sqaud, or at least there should be. The problems are numerous though. The mentality of the squad is poor, all very passive and risk averse. Whether that is the make up of the players or the impact of 3 years of sh!t management is hard to tell, it's probably a bit of both.

There's not many big characters, but we've also seen that almost any player that comes into the side quickly gets any spark driven out of them. Harrop and Thomas came here as players capable of playing in the Championship but they seem to have quickly disappeared in the fog of toothless mediocrity. That suggests it runs deeper than individuals.

Then factor in 2.5 years of Lambert failing to build anything at all. No system or patterns of play. No partnerships. Nothing. And his only solution when things weren't going well was "we need a bit of help", and cue a bloated and unwieldy squad and a reinforcement of the idea that making things happen is the responsibility of other players.

Then there's the lack of balance. We signed McGuiness on loan at a time when we had Chambers, Wilson, and Nsiala all fit and Woolf only a couple of weeks away from fitness. We had Ndaba looking capable of stepping I to cover in the worst emergency as well. But we had no specialist right back. How have we ended up with a sqaud with so many players and yet we're still starting a 35 year old Chambers at right back on the reg? Madness. And overall despite us having plenty of players who are more than good enough individually, we can't seem to fit them into a functioning team. There's no one system you'd say suits the players at our disposal. Of course that's then reinforced by a lack of coaching and working on systems and patterns of play, but it also speaks to a fundamental lack of balance.

I had hoped Cook, with his quality as a manager, could come in and get a bounce out of these players, but it does look like the issues are too deeply ingrained for a quick fix. We need changes in the summer as I don't know that Cook will get sufficient time with the squad to turn around 3 years of underperformance and muddled thinking.

Go back and you'll see a lot of people that were saying it. Mick Mills on Suffolk was saying we had the best squad in the league only a few weeks ago. In truth, I don't think the squad is as bad as some are now making it out to be. Are you telling me that the likes of Gillingham, Doncaster, Blackpool and Lincoln have better squads than us? I don't believe that for a second. I agree that we are incredibly unbalanced but we should be top 6 at least.

Yeah, booooo, get him out the door. He’s rubbish. Where was the new manager bounce, he’s upset a winning team, he’s has a month which is more than enough, we’d be top of the league with Lambo at the helm etc etc etc.

Running them ragged and falling apart mentally? Deflated? Really? Surely you are not being serious. It’s almost as if they were on a 20 game unbeaten run under PL tearing teams a new one. When I last looked, we’d scraped three straight wins, one against 10 men. Not quite comparing to Arsenal’s Invincibles, is it.

For goodness sake, give the poor bloke a chance. There maybe a few half decent players hidden in in this mammoth squad of dross, but it’s going to take more than 5 minutes for Cook to dig them out. The same actually applied to a number of the players in John Lyall’s squad who performed far better than they ever did under Duncan. It took Lyall time and the same will apply to Cook.

It’s a nice myth to revise now, but the abject failure this year let alone last to mount a promotion campaign with the players we have is appalling.

This is one season where after having rivals weakened even further by COVID we have squandered our numerous advantages.

Excellent post.

Its not a coincidence that the sudden turn on the players has coincided with the day Cook walked in because of an understandable desperation to maintain the belief that he's the messiah.

Few issues with this

- majority have said we have one of the best squads in the league - still think we do
- the manager was the problem, just because a new manager doesn’t improve the team doesn’t mean the previous manager was good and shouldn’t have been sacked?
- give the new manager time, look at what Barton has said at Bristol, the wrong way of doing it but he has a point and we are probably similar.
- I don’t think we look any worse then we did under lambert
- if this is the 3rd manager to come in and run them ragged, do you not think this highlights an issue with have with the team? Or are all 3 wrong?

I've said this numerous times on here but Cook's last 7 seasons:

3 league titles
2 play-off finishes
Kept Wigan in the Championship twice (bar dodgy owners) and had automatic promotion form post COVID.

He was wanted by Championship clubs. So for the position we are in, he is in some ways 'the Messiah'. We have a manager that we should fully trust and back to get this right given a chance - and that is based on very recent evidence.

Its not a coincidence, no. Fans are tired and frustrated and need to blame something or someone to make themselves feel better and to try and put some semblance of reason together for our abject failures.

Clearly Cook isn't to blame given he's only just arrived so that rules him out, at least, you'd think so amongst the sane anyway.

Yeah, I really hope he is what we need. He certainly has credentials at lower levels, with one promotion from this division, which is a good sign. Equally, Hurts had just done well with Shrewsbury and he was a disaster. Sometimes it's best not just rely on the past and judge on what you see in front of you.
