So in the past 48 hours 16:48 - Mar 31 with 6655 views | bluelagos | We've been told that structural racism isn't a problem in the UK, that the Met police's refusal to facilitate a safe vigil and subsequently arresting women at a vigil is hunky dory and nothing at all to do with the inappropriate pressure from the Home Secretary, and Boris having an affair with a woman whilst simultaneously directing public money her way is "acting with honesty and integrity". What next?

It is a bit that way isn't it. Black is white and white is black at the moment. Quite a large whiff of Trumpism about this current lot (and always has been - Johnson has been a serial liar his whole life, so it's unreasonable to expect anything else). But, critically and depressingly, enough of the population don't care if they lie to us, misappropriate our money, attack our human rights, attack regulations that are designed to protect us and/or the environment, and that they are also trying to undermine our historical institutions of democracy. Go figure

The country has lost it's mind. Brexit and the populism that came with it divided us into 'sides' and it seems now that those who picked the side of liars and charlatans will wholeheartedly back those liars and charlatans to the hilt. Standards in public life have never been lower. In the past 18 months there have been several things happen that would ordinarily have led to resignations of senior cabinet ministers or even the PM himself. The country treats these things with a collective shrug.

If black is white and white is black, I guess that explains the lack of structural racism in the UK then. No need to worry at all, cheers for clearing that up Boris :-) Now, I best get my watermelon smile ready to laugh at some letterboxed muslims. Or not.

There's been so much 'but covid' that anything else seems to get swept under the rug and these lot are still getting support because 'anyone else would have struggled too'. I mean, that's bollcks, the fck ups have been massive and we could've done so much better. Sadly, snudge did make a good point in a bad way about the vaccine rollout paving over the cracks. You're completely right though. There would have been so many more resignations and sackings, even under May, for the sort of behaviour we've seen since johnson's mob have been in. It's absolutely mad.

But what's new there? You're not telling me our education system was better in the 60s/70s/80s than it is now? Yet politicians had some decency - there was a line which when crossed would actually mean they had to resign. They sort of tried to tell the truth. BJ, Patel, Gove they are literally going full on Trump it seems without any attempt to keep things truthful...

Back in the day, politicians were, for the most part, held to account by the press. Nowadays there seems to be zero consequences for incompetence at best and blatant corruption at worst.

It does seem that they can get away with pretty much anything now. Not only do 'their side' support whatever they do, but they just lie and deny anything happened in the first place. It's most odd. I don't understand the slavish support. Cultish even. You support a football team for life, not politicians. Politicians should be judged on their actions each election imo. I suppose there's always been an element of political tribalism though; I just find it odd and unhelpful.

I think they've just worked out that the press will get bored so they can essentially ignore it and nobody can do anything. I mean they could technically get recalled but because everything is so polarised, I doubt their own voters would do it. Party MPs won't do anything against their own unless what the person has done is way beyond corruption.

But BJ's affair, at a time when he was directing public money to Jennifer Arcuri has been reported / uncovered by the press. They have done their bit, yet nothing happens, no consequences, just a "It's Boris" resignation from his colleagues, none of whom seem to give a sh1t. Where's the big hitters telling him to go or they will resign? No one seems to give a fck...

I agree with you in part but I don't feel that, "those who picked the side of liars and charlatans will wholeheartedly back those liars and charlatans to the hilt." What I do feel is that there is no sensible middle ground and at the same time, being 'middle ground' is suddenly seen as being something 'dirty' or 'lacking' in some way. When there isn't anything sensible in the middle the vast majority of people are left with a choice of either siding with a 'side' you don't agree with (and as you say, it has become two 'sides') or simply living with the status quo.

That’s what I meant; previously there’d be a big reveal in the newspapers and then within a couple of days politician would fall on their sword. That never happens now. Just seems to be a collective shrug. Together with a staggeringly large number of people who still, despite the evidence before them, insist that “Boris” (and trump) “tell it like it is”.

It's as if we need a free and fair press that isn't owned by billionaires putting out the messages that suit the billionaires. But more than that it's about everyone giving a folk and pulling together. Corbyn had two cracks at it, one more than Milliband. Now the Corbynistas have to give it a rest and support someone who ticks 60 to 70% of their wish-list. Rather than undermine him and continue to hand the Tories power on a plate. Although, let's not forget, many of those who joined the Labour Party to support Corbyn are revolutionary Communists. Many of those actually want things to get worse so that the working class is conscientised and revolts.

"working class is conscientised". Absolutely want this to happen. Who doesn't? Apart from that, all I want is some basic equality all round; fair access to all fundamental services and the nationalisation of those services.
