Why would the University sector collapse? Thought numbers were stronger than ever?

Applications up across the sector this year, except in my specialism. Bit of a blip year to be honest as applications had been increasing year on year. But the sector is in real financial trouble, fees have been capped at £9250 for 10 years but expenditure has increased year on year for all Universities. Government now seriously considering caps on student numbers and reducing fees for 'arts' courses, which would be a death knell for many courses at University as those courses often have the highest overheads.

Genuine question - why would 'arts' course have higher overheads? Where I work, the technical subjects have a higher budget per student, as they need more equipment and special labs.

Cameras, Lenses, Studio Flashes, Darkroom Materials and the like aren't cheap. And we can suffer quite a lot of damages as students aren't exactly gentle with the kit they use, I swear they wipe their arses with some of it. Add to that that the law of diminishing returns means we need to replace gear every 4-5 years and pay for maintenance every summer. We have 3 photographic studios and 2 darkrooms, with all the associated maintenance. At my University, the Arts subjects are probably up there with the technical subjects. All that being said, our Humanities subject area has just been decimated by the University, but we aren't a Russell Group university, so they don't have significant recruitment.

We've just been through a demographic dip that has seen home applications drop for many courses (still not properly out of that). Massive drop in EU applications for obvious reasons. Medical course have been hammered by the scrapping of nursing bursaries. It's variable, but a lot of universities are struggling. Recent review in Wales, for example, found that pretty much all are screwed and they've all been cutting staff numbers (plus Welsh Unis get about £2k less per student than England, so not a level playing field). The better Unis can cope by dipping into the pool of slightly lower grade 6th formers, but that then hammers the middle unis who are losing out on those students. And now the European Structural Funding has disappeared (was significant for those areas of the UK who were eligible), we've not signed up to the EU Territorial Cooperation Programmes (also a former big funder of research) and the govt are also proposing to pay for our involvement in the EU Horizon programme by taking the money from the existing Research Council budget. It's a bit of a clusterfeck at the moment. It'll be interesting to see how this all impacts global league tables, as they're extremely important to international recruitment.

OK, now I get it. I was thinking 'arts' as opposed to sciences, not as opposed to humanities.
