There’s probably been 100s of threads on these two, but I’ve missed them.
If they were as good as we’ve been told, surely they’d be dominating the midfield and ripping up division 3. But they haven’t, far from it. Neither of them have kicked on. They aren’t little boys anymore. I’d personally sell both of them. No goals, hardly any assists. They offer nothing. No good looking pretty, making easy side ways passes.
Downes is the only division 2 midfielder we have.
It’s time we move on from this bunch of no hopers. I wanted them to be good, we all did. But they just aren’t good enough. |  |

I keep seeing this accusation against Dozzell in particular that he hasn't scored or assisted enough so we should get rid.
Mascherano scored 1 goal in about 100 appearances for Liverpool playing the same role as a full international, and he was 10 times the player. It's not going to happen how Dozzell has been asked to play, linking the defence and midfield.
He's doing ok in his breakthrough season. Not as well as the expectation based on the hype, but this season will have been a massive learning curve for him. And he's still only 21 learning the game at his home club. Compare that to Keanan Bennetts who's got a much higher pedigree but has been rubbish, is older and has been shipped off to some no-hopers to try and get some games in him. Dozzell is doing just fine for his age. 21 is young when you're expecting a player to anchor your midfield, set the tempo and create chances all at the same time. This season, he's created more chances for us than any other player, despite playing as our deepest midfielder. He's made defensive contributions as regularly as Downes has and considerably more frequently than any other midfielder. He's been a mainstay in a team that is decent defensively and he's improving that side of his game all the time.
He's at the beginning of his career, playing behind a rotating cast of utterly useless attacking players in what is basically his first full season as a pro. He's contributing perfectly well and we don't appreciate him nearly enough. [Post edited 1 Apr 2021 20:10]

Our midfield is one big problem. Like I said, I’d only keep downes.
Dozzell isn’t a holding midfielder, I’m not sure what he is to be honest. He hardly tackles, and when he does he gives away a free kick. And he hardly busts a gut getting up and down the pitch.
We are all desperate to see boys from the academy to do well, but it’s ok to point out they aren’t up to the job. | |

It certainly does. That stat for Dozzell is pretty good considering how he’s told to play. Very good in fact when you compare to other deep lying midfielders in the league (in any league). It’s a strange thing to attack him on. Rashness and not staying on his feet are far bigger issues. | |

Equally, we're alright defensively, shouldn't he get some credit for that? He tops our midfielders (and most of the division) for interceptions, he's 2nd on tackling amongst our midfielders.
His rashness is improving too. He hasn't had a yellow card since Peterborough Away, 11 games ago. Which is what you'd expect from a 21-year-old learning to screen the defence. [Post edited 2 Apr 2021 10:37]
