Town data analysis — what are the low-hanging fruit? 12:30 - Apr 8 with 1355 viewsDarth_Koont

Seems that we’re going to make as much use of data analysis as possible. Not sure how much we already do but think it’s good to at least emphasize that.

Without access to all the data, one of the stats that always seems to jump out is how generally poorer our pass percentage in the attacking third is compared to the opposition. And that’s the experience of watching us too as passes seem far too often to be played at the wrong time, to the wrong place or player who’s not in position or the ball is miscontrolled. These aren’t even killer balls, sometimes we just fumble possession when we’re simple trying to pressurise the opposition and get them defending deeper.

Maybe there are things we can do to improve on this for the current team and a hopeful stab at the play-offs. But whatever happens this season, it needs to be brought into our recruitment to have players who can keep hold of the ball better and/or play simple, accurate passes at the right time.

Any other stats that people have seen where we should expect better?

Edit: Obviously the win and loss columns, that goes without saying.

I would say stats on dribbling/beating defenders and cross completion.

It’s bizarre to me that we’ve spent over three years now trying to play variations on a system that relies on attacking wide play...without any proper wingers.

We’ve tried players who call themselves wingers but aren’t really, or aren’t any good at it (Edwards).

We’ve tried strikers (Sears, Jackson).

We’ve tried midfielders (Judge, Dobra).

So some stats on people who actually get to the byline and put a cross in would be welcome.

But frankly it shouldn’t really take this kind of Moneyball approach to recognise the bleedin’ obvious...

Our passing is 10th in the league at the moment at 74%. A potentially bigger problem is aerial duels won, which we lie 14th in the league currently.

Shots per game, the biggest issue obviously 21st with 10 shots per game, only Wigan, Northampton and Shrewsbury are lower than that.

Discipline is awful, 3rd highest in the league for Reds and Yellows.

Defensively, we are pretty good with shots conceded per game and with tackles per game, for interceptions we are third over all.

Shots on target, we are 19th with 3.4 SOT per game, Shrewsbury, Swindon, Burton, Northampton, and Wigan lower. Top of that table are Peterborough with 4.9 SOT per game.

Dribbles per game, we sit 10th with 5.7 successful dribbles per game, compared to 7.9 for MK Dons, (Something to watch on Saturday)

Where we have real real problems is in 'Unsuccessful touches' so this is where first touch is poor and goes to an opposition player or a misplaced pass goes straight to the opposition. For this stat we sit equal 1st in the table with 16.3 per game with Lincoln.

Your last para is spot on and is indicative of the "I can't do anything with it, you have a go" mentality...

We are going to play 4231.

Given that we need 2 behind the striker who can beat a man (left and right sides) and a central person who can pick out passes. Beating a man is much more important than keeping possession in this league (IMHO) as teams are setup well when in position but once you beat someone they go a bit to pieces and can be picked apart.

So I guess dribbling, crossing, goals, assists for the left and right and assists, key passes, goals for the central one.

Everything wrong with us is in attack so this has to be the focus.

I suspect much of that poor passing isn’t actually the fault of the passer but the lack of movement off the ball by the intended recipient. Imagine having the footballing brain of Judge or Dozzell and playing what to you is an obvious pass to discover that your team mate hasn’t moved from where he was when you last looked. It must be infuriating and leads to conservative passing with no real objective.

It's not just in attack, it's what's behind them that's also the problem as they aren't getting the supply. Defensively, we have been pretty decent this season, but we still have defensive positions that you'd like to see strengthened. Nevertheless, it's from the defence forwards where our real concerns are and why we just aren't functioning as an attacking unit and fail to manage games effectively.

There are lots of issues but I don't think the 2 CM's in Cook's formation is the main one.

We quite often get the ball up to the 3 behind the forward but more often than not it comes straight back to the 2 CM or to the full backs.

Those 3 players need to be forward looking and we simply don't seem to have those players. I think Downes and Dozzell would be fine as the 2 CM if presented with mobile and forward thinking options in front of them.

We also clearly need a LB for Cooks formation to work.

Think the obvious one is entries into the box - we simply don't do enough. May mean we need to take more risks, or put balls in from deeper etc - but you don't score goals unless you regularly get into opponents box - at one point this season the top 5 for possession occupied the top 4 entries into the box with the other one of those top 5 in something like 22nd place......I'm sure you can guess who the team was who dominated the ball but didn't get into the box

The difficulty of these stats is the other things that influence them. Passing stats depend a lot on the movement of other players off the ball and the development of an understanding (partnerships) on the pitch.

The obvious stat of concern is chances created. Under Cook’s short reign so far we’re averaging two chances a game. It’s almost impossible to comprehend how useless we are at making chances. No attempts on target v Rochdale. It’s criminal just how bad we’ve been. We continue to make football look difficult.

See I do, they are very much part of the problem, offer very little and part of the issue why we can’t control games . It will certainly be interesting in the summer regarding the ins and outs. Naturally, PC won’t be able to get rid of the entire squad, but there will be good players available if we recruit well.

I think that is all a factor of having nothing in front of them with which to work.

Dozzell almost always comes to collect the ball from the defence, looks up, there is nothing going on and passes it back to the defence.

I guess we will see over the summer what happens.

Aerial duels and shots per game might be connected. As far as I can tell we haven't scored a header from a cross in open play all season.

Westlake made the point that getting the ball in the box will get you goals at this level because the defenders always have a mistake in them. We just don't do it anywhere near enough.

10 shots per game?

Averages.

We must have had very high figures in the first 7 games of the season.
