Have been reliably informed that he is in discussions re. ITFC CEO vacancy.

Resigned from his role at Celtic to "pursue new opportunities" a week or so ago.

To give a serious answer to a joke comment, having spoken to people who knew what was happening as it happened since Wednesday, it had stalled on more than one occasion. Was very on-off over a fairly lengthy period and only finally got absolutely done early this week, although obviously the framework of the deal had been settled by that stage.

I hold my hands up that I should have had a story up at the weekend to say it was happening and again on Wednesday morning but for every source telling me it was happening, and I had a number of usually reliable ones telling me that was the case, someone else who I thought ought to know was saying they weren't aware that that was the case. I had a story written and should have gone with it earlier and the announcement came just as I felt I had enough to run it.

To be honest Phil, you were dammed if you did and dammed if you didn't, unless you had complete full knowledge and confidence from all sources then it could have been hugely problematic for you in the long run.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, as frustrating as it was for you.

Ashton is well paid at Bristol C, why would he want to drop to L1?
If we did get Ashton, despite his poor rapport with the fans there, it surely signals a massive coup to get him whilst we’re in L1 and suggests there are big plans in place.

We will pay him more? Paying for a decent CEO should ultimately pay for itself. And in fact he has at BC - seems a very tough negotiator amongst other things.

When you say It only finally got absolutely done early this week, does that mean it wasn't finally done on Saturday (when greyhound revealed it was done)?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Indeed, with hindsight I probably should have had confidence in the sources saying it was happening, but a big story to get wrong and there had been so much false info floating around on it.

Bit more frustrating as I'd had good info on the story all the way along - Marcus five per cent, pension fund, ME keeping part of the training ground etc - but didn't get it over the line, so to speak.

That is true but we are a Championship club in League One, if that doesn't sound arrogant.

I think it was pretty much done by then but Marcus only finally signed the papers as it were on Tuesday.

To be fair, I, as I assume many others, believed you and ignored all the fans saying they knew better and it was happening. So it was a brilliant shock surprise when it was announced. No need to hold your hands up! Let’s all enjoy this optimism whilst it lasts!

Fortune favors the brave and all, but given the hassle you have had with the club this year it was a huge gamble to get wrong, your livelihood is at stake and imagine if it had gone wrong, also sounds like Marcus has been umming and arring and taking the coin toss in his decision so even if it had been decided, you always felt that a couple of wins against Wigan and Rochdale could have changed his thinking.

Awful risk to take.

That’s been one of my views on it, why move from BC where he is Lansdowne’s most trusted guy there. And no doubt very well paid!

May be a package being out together with some ownership rights so he sees some of profits as well as salary?

Thanks, although I was somewhat circumspect on where it was from the weekend onwards the more I was hearing about it. I actually heard ORG's name on Sunday but that just confused matters as I didn't know where they fitted in.

im still confused on what it actually means TBH

The 3 lions for example could all be excited and do a great job

but if ORG decide to pull, we're fked are we not?

I have wondered whether results might still have impacted on his decision at this relatively late stage. I have had it suggested that breaking into the top six and appointing PC might have reinvigorated him, even if it was briefly. Others have suggested that recent performances tipped him over the line and persuaded him that the side as it stands are miles away and it was time to sell to someone else.

The thing is, as a proper journalist Phil has to be absolutely sure, while greyhound just posting on a football messageboard it doesn't really matter to him if it falls through at the last.

Whilst clearly greyhound knew something he also had fortune on his side given he posted it was done on Saturday and Marcus didn't finally sign off until Tuesday.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Which is the salary of a very average Championship player these days. As Phil said below, we are a Championship club in L1. If you pay for the right executive people, they pay for themselves. He managed to get the best part of £50m for Webster, Kelly and Brownhill a couple of summers ago.

Others who know more about how these sorts of investment work would know more than me. But, I assume, if all doesn't go well, then at some point they'd look to pull out and the club would have to be sold.

Yes, that is always the issue. I was probably a bit too conservative in this instance, had enough sources but wanted to get more and rather than backing up what I had they did the opposite.

I think the fact you didn't have a story up added to the total excitement when it was announced on twitter...

There were so many rumours about 11am announcement on twitter, deal being announced etc that when it was announced at 11:01 it was complete euphoria from my end, having not seen confirmation from any media beforehand!

ORG are probably less likely than an individual to pull the plug. However, if things don't go particularly well then I think it's fair to say they probably wouldn't be as diligent as ME in finding an appropriate buyer. I'd see that as the major risk and it's very helpful Marcus is staying invested should that ever happen I expect.

3 Lions have a minority equity stake but it's pretty clear that they've been given a bigger role in matters than a 5% stake would ordinarily give you, i.e. ORG is happy for them to take a lead role, have board seats etc.

Johnson and co have clearly had an interest in investing in English football. Once they've found a fund committed to that they'd have worked with MOL to find a suitable club. For all that work and because they clearly see opportunity those that have done the donkey work run the investment (i.e. the club) and ORG hopes they deliver value.

Marcus has clearly been very diligent in vetting potential new owners to his credit, so I would imagine that there is some agreement for at least the medium term that they will be investing competitively.

I also wonder if they have alternative potential investments in suffolk and the town, I think one of the lions is a very lucrative property investor, Brett is always looking into complexes etc

I hope you don't misinterpret this comment, but I think it's probably only within the journalistic sub-culture that it matters whether you had an exclusive or beat everyone by 24 hours. I understand that that would have given you kudos with your peers, but I think most TWTD users would prefer you to get things right than constantly over-reach in an attempt to splash exclusives.

Those of us who have been reading a long time know the difference between a "TWTD understands" and a "whilst it has been reported that...". The second is basically a Phil Ham raised eyebrow at the drivel which gets pushed on Twitter.

I like it that you err on the side of solid sourcing over def info.
