Population of Ipswich (ONS 2017 estimate) 150,334

UK deaths due to Covid (ONS data) 151,313.

So basically the whole town plus somewhere like Bramford. Grim.

And yet on Twitter again this morning there are 10s if not 100s of posts from people eluding to some huge NHS cover up about just how bad Covid actually has been, falsifying of death certs rife, and the fact this ‘cover-up’ of Covid is about to break as a news story!?!

Absolute madness. It’s like a disease in itself. That some people I know we’ll have bought into.

That would have to mean that all other global heath services are in on it as well and the bigger a conspiracy becomes the more points of failure.

Of course they don't want to hear that. Some page on FB always has the correct information as far as they are concerned.

It's hugely depressing.

Watched a piece on BBC news last night about Brazil, it is shocking over there, 100k cases a day and 4k deaths per day, yet the president is still saying it's mild flu.

Suppose I'll get hauled over the coals for talking about BBC and they are part of the MSM covid cover up.

Anyone who cites MSM in those terms is generally talking rubbish. You might even get some PM's telling you to "jab yourself" as well if you're really lucky.

Bolsonaro is a total disgrace. He's been repeatedly fined by the courts for breaking Covid rules (the few that Brazil has) and has resisted lockdowns at every turn. They are in a truly awful situation there with huge daily deaths and no sign of any exit strategy. It's worth noting that they aren't even benefiting from warmer temperatures like the US and EU did but are having 4000+ deaths daily when the temperature is ~30C.

It looks like things might be coming to a head though. There is a lot of pressure being applied to him now and the supreme court has started an investigation into his handling of the crisis (I believe).

Unfortunately the stats coming out of Brazil are probably a bit lower than the reality as well. We won't know until if/when excess death figures are published.

It's horrible what is happening there at the moment. Hopefully it will show the populace that electing popularist or strongman leaders isn't the way forward but I am not hopeful.

The only estimate worthy of the name will be excess deaths against an average and even that will be slightly distorted by lack of flu deaths in the face of the pandemic this year.

Most countries published stats are laughable. That’s obvious looking at them. From the Russians and Chinese who make it up to Brazil and Mexico where there is a massive stigma attached to C19 on a death certificate even if they bother reporting at all. In India I doubt anyone bothers with those at the bottom of the heap and even in the US there’s a BBC article about NY care home deaths. Different ways of measuring, missing data out, you name it. As for ONS, they can be inaccurate too. I know because I’ve seen them in action. The only true value of these stats is really that if you adopt the same statistical method throughout, you can see trends.

In one sense, it really doesn’t matter how far out the death figure is. That it’s so tragically huge, let alone those whose health has been ruined, is a testament to to the Government’s grotesque incompetence. Yes, because of population density, the nature of an open economy there was always going to be a problem, but could it/should it have been closer to Germany’s figures than Italy’s? Of course. The vaccine programme appears to have been handled well to date, but just about everything else has been totally shambolic.

I don’t care how well or badly other countries have done or that HMG tried hard. Johnson and crowd are accountable for this country and the result is a disaster. They should go.

You are right that excess deaths is the only reliable metric but we probably won't get that for a lot of countries.

Mexico have just revised their figures up over 30% and a Russian minister revealed that Russia figures are actually 100% higher but they haven't changed their official numbers.

I don't think the true scale will be able to stay hidden forever. It's incredibly sad as you say.

I read somewhere that the Russian figure is really about 4x the published one but who knows.

I suspect that you are right in that the true figure will be hidden forever. That’s politics I suppose. Just awful, but then Goebbels proved in 1945 that if you tell a lie fast enough, repeat it a few times, it’ll become fact, so political gerrymandering the truth is nothing new.

Ha, I didn't see that. I saw the way the thread was going and pretty much left it alone. It was a bit daft on both sides really. Undoubtedly PC & Co weren't complying with guidance, which isn't good however you look at it. But then again there are scales of breaches and posing for a photo outdoors would be pretty minor. It was a strangely heated thread of extremes with no room for nuance.
