Observations on Bristol City Transfer policy 09:22 - Apr 14 with 1561 views | gordon | Looking at the Bristol City squad, there are quite a few low ambition signings in recent years that don't really point to the man Ashton being such a whizz in the transfer market. In the last few years they've brought in Henri Lansbury, Chris Martin, Tommy Rowe, Danny Simpson, Nakhi Wells, Adrian Mariappa, Marley Watkins who are all 30 or over now and are at a stage of their career where low-midtable Championship is about their level, or lower. Andreas Weimann is presumably on a big wage and was signed for a big fee that they aren't going to get anywhere near to recouping, and he hasn't pulled up any trees. Can't really see any exciting signings other than a 19 year old Frenchman from Monaco, and a couple of young players picked up from Chelsea. Not intended to be negative, and I do still think we need a fair bit of leadership and know-how alongside our youngsters (who I still think are pretty talented at this level). Someone like Lansbury might be a good shout for us, assuming he's done in the Championship. [Post edited 14 Apr 2021 9:23]

Observations on Bristol City Transfer policy on 09:24 - Apr 14 with 1520 views | Steve_M | Steve Lansdowne has admitted that he made some bad transfer decisions over the last year, not sure that it is all down to Ashton. And Lansbury is not and will never be a good shout.

Observations on Bristol City Transfer policy on 09:24 - Apr 14 with 1515 views | SWGF | What is the role of a CEO as opposed to a (for example) Sporting Director like Stuart Webber? To my mind, a CEO is responsible for getting deals done that the manager/scouts have highlighted as a requirement, not necessarily to find those targets themselves.

CEO's do have a shelf-life in his defence and early on he's done good things apparently.

Well his two previous clubs are doing a lot better than we have for years so he deserves the benefit of any doubt. One thing seems sure, everyone at the club is in for a hell of a shake up. I imagine there are a few who are not going to like what’s coming!

That's interesting, didn't know that - yes, someone of Lansbury's age and experience in the middle of the park, but maybe with a better attitude!

Yes, but you'd like to think that a hot-shot CEO would stop the manager wasting money on players like those listed above - having said that I think Cook would make pretty good decisions on recruitment at this level, so maybe not so much of a problem for us. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Certainly sounds like we're in for a bit of upheaval this summer, with all sorts of different outcomes very possible!
Observations on Bristol City Transfer policy on 09:48 - Apr 14 with 1254 views | BloomBlue | To be fair nobody in football will ever be perfect in transfers even the greatest managers all have failures in the transfer market against their name. Football is like any job, move people to a different location and sometimes that doesn't work for them or their family after a period of time and that can impact how they perform. For me the importance is the transfers which do work are far greater than the failures

Also, people are going to reach the age of 30! That's not a problem. Remember, a CEO is not a Director of Football.

Yup - just curious and wondering to what extent we're going to have a similar / different strategy (a league below obviously). Signing a 33 year-old Danny Simpson though!

We'll have to wait and see. Signing a 33 year old Danny Simpson is probably not a bad signing.

Only signed him a couple of weeks ago to be fair, Ashton probably had nothing to do with it.

Well it depends on what's agreed, managers generally like gonna be final say don't they so if thats what was agreed then thats that. Wells is a player who should score for fun in the Champ
