Is the ITFC squad suffering from clinical depression? Here is a representative summary of the condition:

"Clinical depression is characterized by persistently depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairment in daily life. It can be caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and social sources of distress. These factors may cause changes in brain function, including altered activity of certain neural circuits in the brain.

The persistent feelings of sadness or loss of interest that characterize major depression can lead to a range of behavioral and physical symptoms. These may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-esteem. Treatment may involve medication, counseling, a change of environment, or a combination of these approaches
".

During the last three years, ITFC has experienced: a demoralizing relegation season, a Covid-curtailed season, a prolonged lock-down with enforced isolation, a truncated pre-season, and a season of playing in empty stadia. This is more than enough to provide 'a combination of biological, psychological, and social sources of distress'.

It may be appropriate for the club to arrange for a sports psychiatrist to provide assistance and support to the squad during the coming pre-season. This could be especially effective in helping talented younger players, such as Downes, Wolfenden, Nydam, and Kenlock, to achieve their full potential.

That's sports psychiatry

Sports psychology focuses more on confidence, motivation, zones of optimal performance etc

No player or manager ever sets out to be sh1t. It's worth asking WHY a squad of players and their manager is under-performing. I'm offering a plausible analysis and making a constructive suggestion.

Sad that you've missed out Dozzell, if your hunch is right. He is a shadow of the player he was as a youth.

It's easier for Ipswich Town to just get rid and start again... but it's an interesting point you make about whether the club has a responsibility to rehabilitate the players that have clearly been mentally impaired, whilst in their care, to the point where they can no longer do their job.

Was with you until you mentioned Kenlock.

Very perceptive. I included Kenlock and omitted Dozzell because I think that Kenlock can become a useful player for us, whereas Dozzell will need a change of environment in order to be successful.

I'm assuming that ITFC will mostly get rid and start again, but still hope that the club will do what it can to salvage the careers of young players with a lot of talent and potential.

The depression theory can explain why there was no new manager bounce with Paul Cook. New managers provide a change of environment that is frequently perceived positively, at least initially. However, the need to adjust to a new manager in an otherwise unchanged organizational context can be seen as 'yet another' source of stress by a group of workers that is suffering from deep-seated depression.

Paul Cook needs to perform a massive demolition and rebuild. He recognizes this and appears to be relishing the task.

Let's just hope he is up to it... he is an experienced manager but he won't ever have faced this situation before. I doubt many managers have!

Perhaps we might review what is different about this group of players and any other group of players whose team was relegated from their respective divisions in 2019. With the exception of those who gained promotion at the first attempt those players, too, would have experienced "a Covid-curtailed season, a prolonged lock-down with enforced isolation, a truncated pre-season, and a season of playing in empty stadia."

I'm not saying there is nothing in the theory but a wider base and some comparisons might lead to a different assessment.

ITFC-specific variables that need to be taken into account are the owner and the manager.

Marcus Evans was an almost-absentee owner who was no longer inclined to make significant additional investments. Paul Lambert was reputedly remote from the players and prone to experiencing personal stress. These circumstances are consistent with the ITFC squad being more-than-averagely prone to sliding into depression.

A plausible candidate for a triggering event is Evan's announcement of a five-year contract extension for Lambert. Whatever impact it had on the squad, many (perhaps most) supporters experienced an abrupt sense of shock and disbelief.

It’s the same way anyone ends up performing in a toxic workplace. Once the damage is done it’s very hard to claw back.
