This is a great take on ESL from the QPR forum on 17:01 - Apr 20 by Radlett_blue | Rather lengthy but well written. The reality is that greed set in when the Football League decreed that clubs should keep all receipts from home games, giving a bigger built in financial advantage to the Man Utds of the world; this preceded the PL & was around the time when a similar group of Div 1 clubs, dubbed the "Platinum 8", tried to grab a bigger share of football's then paltry TV revenue. The formation of the PL was the first signpost & the ESL has been waiting to happen for a long time & nearly happened several years ago when JP Morgan (again) had put the finance in place but some clubs got cold feet & UEFA responded by coming up with the Champions' League. The ESL format is a more desirable TV product because who wants to watch Barcelona v FC Cluj in a near meaningless CL group game, with only one likely result? It's all rather like the old story about the rich, middle aged man who asks the attractive young woman if she would sleep with him if he gave her £10,000. "Maybe" she replies. "OK, how about 20 quid?" - followed by indignation along the lines of "what kind of girl do you think I am"? The man replies "We've already established what you are; we're now just haggling about the price". |
You think people want to watch Liverpool vs Atletico in a dead rubber during 'Super Tuesday, Matchday 8'?

I think that with the American-style league & then play-off format, most teams will have chance of making the play offs until near the end of the season. Some fans here are already saying how boring the PL will be if CL places aren't up for grabs!

The financial reward for reaching the prem will be a fraction of what it is now when the TV money all goes to the super league. [Post edited 20 Apr 2021 19:05]

Nearly! It’s the love of money that’s the problem. That’s what the Good Book says, and I make it right!

Ultimately though, if less money comes into the game, then there's less money to spend on wages, transfers etc, which in turn means that it'll COST less to get to, and stay in the Premier League. These investors just want percentages. Right now, it costs high-tens of millions to get hundreds of millions back. They'll still be happy if it costs us millions to get tens of millions back. It all depends on what the fans do. If they shun the ESL out of spite and carry on watching the Prem, then it makes sense that the Prem money won't drop by THAT much. After all, it's all just advertising money, isn't it? So if the viewers are still there, the money will follow. I kinda think that if the ESL does go ahead (which it probably won't), then it'll have one bumper season where people watch it, and then - in Europe at least - things will go back to relative normal for our own leagues. Just my hunch, though.
