What would it cost to build a new stand 17:18 - Apr 20 with 953 viewsEssexBloo

I would guess the Americans wouldn’t cut corners and maybe look at adding restaurant's etc as well but what would it cost?

I might suggest they build a Craven Cottage style pub in the corner, happy to run it.

As a sort of aside, do I remember rightly that some soil-botherers (and the bloke who blogged/blogs about the pitch) said that our pitch got worse when the new stand was built? Maybe something to take into consideration if we do eventually do it and if I'm not talking boll0cks.

How long would it take them to get a profit for that investment ?

Not sure we need a new stand, given we don't come close to filling the existing four at their current capacity.

Refurbishing a stadium (or building a new stadium) isn't just about extending capacity though, it is about providing facilities for the football club to operate better; be it providing better sales facilities for Planet Blue, better fan experience during matches or more retail options to make money from e.g. restaurant and bars.

And it's fair to say the Cobbold desperately needs improving on all of the above after 20-30 years of neglect.

There is zero chance that the cost/benefit of rebuilding the Cobbold without the likelihood of additional revenue from ticket sales works out for us at this stage. We're a third division club in a medium sized Town pulling in 17k fans.

We do need a new stand. As much as I like the Cobbold Stand it’s showing it’s age. You have to look at what other clubs are doing. There is an opportunity to expand on revenue streams, bars, hotels, meeting areas, restaurants, casinos etc etc. This would benefit the club massively. I would be looking at building a similar size stand with all or some of the above integrated.

At a cost of millions that will never be recouped before the new stand becomes dated and needs replacing. How many third division clubs with a half empty ground are building new stands with a Nandos in?

That’s not true at all. The entire match day experience isn’t about the 90 minuets. The club and the stadium do not offer a great facilities or an incentive to return. There is no way I would ever recommend anyone goes to Lowestoft, why? Because it’s a hole.

I live in an area which accommodates both Norwich and Ipswich fans. The neutrals always choose to go to Norwich, because they can get a drink, it’s a better environment for their kids, better seating, more to do and is spacious.

This club needs to move away from this dinosaur attitude and build for the future.

I’m absolutely certain better and more exciting facilities would generate more interest and grow our fan base.

You could improve the Cobbold by removing every other row of seats. People have got fatter, and the crowd that side older, make it a more comfortable experience! I took the daughters Grandad in their, a Birmingham fan, for a game, he could hardly walk when we left! I do think the lettering along the top should remain the same in any future change, it’s iconic!
