Bobby Robson and the ESL 13:45 - Apr 21 with 594 viewsCrawfordsboot

The great man quoted in the Guardian today

“What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes.

It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.”

Covers it pretty well

...and the polar opposite sentiment from Inter Milan, who can't tell the difference between sport and commerce:

'In their statement, Serie A side Inter Milan said they were "committed to giving fans the best football experience", adding: "Our engagement with all stakeholders to improve the football industry will never change."

It's not about giving the fans 'the best football experience', it's about putting out a good, honest, competitive team and the fans enjoying that teams endeavours to win a game of football. You can stick your prawn sandwiches and half-time razzmatazz up yer whotsit. And it's not an 'industry' it's the people's game, and the only stakes that need to be held are the ones the people will drive through your greedy black hearts!

I daresay some of their other stakeholders made them an offer they couldn't refuse.
