One of the lies being peddled is that the government had to over rule normal checks to rush PPE to the UK

What they don't mention is that was due to them running down stocks, and ignoring warnings from Operation Cygnet

"he Cygnus report was frank about the state of the UK’s readiness. “The UK’s preparedness and response, in terms of its plans, policies and capability, is currently not sufficient to cope with the extreme demands of a severe pandemic that will have a nationwide impact across all sectors,” it found."

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/07/what-was-exercise-cygnus-and-what-

What then followed last March was not so much panic to resolve tge problem they have caused, but a panic to ensure that fellow Tories profited, as can be read here

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/22/fifth-of-uk-covid-contracts-raised

We will never know how many patients and medical staff died as a result of this incompetence, which was followed by what looks like blatant corruption.

And if they have their way, we will not know whose pockets were lined either

Time for real questions to be put, and answers demanded

I have been out leafleting for Labour, but we have very few supporters willing to campaign. If you want the Tories out you need to work to do it, but presently they are due to sweep most of the local elections. Why don't socialists campaign and work hard like the Tories do in elections?

I think I disagree with the last line. At the moment whilst the vaccinations are still ongoing it's too easy for the government to point at other things and say how well they are doing. Same with the gigs and events that are starting up, they will just misdirect.

A proper investigation with actual outcomes should be done once things have settled down when people have time to focus and get angry.

Perhaps I am wrong but I just don't think anything much will happen if it's done at the moment, there is a large section of the public who are ambivalent until they get their lives back to "normal".

A proper investigation is already underway, hence the attempts to avoid answering the questions being put via numerous enquiries

My point is to raise awareness where ever I can ie here, in this instance

And the number of views suggest it is working. What folk choose to do is then up to them, but getting it out there is what is needed.

update

pressure does work, and it is the time as this shows

"Meanwhile, Boris Johnson has ordered an inquiry into the leak of his private text messages with businessman Sir James Dyson, less than 24 hours after Downing Street rejected calls for a probe."

It seems others are taking action now, with the Good Law Project presently going through the courts over these concerns.

"During an urgent hearing before the High Court, the group's lawyers presented an email from an official working in the PPE sourcing team, which reveal concerns about this "high priority" route."

and

One of the deals being challenged concerns 50 million FFP2 face masks supplied by the firm Ayanda Capital, which now cannot be used in the NHS because of concerns over their fit "

It is not that

"The group said it had identified 73 Covid-related contracts with multiple factors that would ordinarily be treated as red flags for possible corruption, such as the company being politically connected. Twenty-seven PPE or testing contracts worth £2.1bn were awarded to firms with connections to the Conservative party, it claimed.

The group said it had also identified £255m of contracts awarded to companies that had only been incorporated within the previous 60 days. The figure is surprising because the short lifespan of the companies suggests they cannot have had any track record of actual business."

But that action to expose this and similar corrupt behaviour is already under way.

The fact that "the company's links with government was being kept from them because important details in emails had been blacked out by officials" tells you much about how running scared they are

At the risk of sounding patronising, the answer is because so few back up their principles with action. I admire you for doing just that.
Conservatives always have been better at campaigning when it comes to knocking on doors etc. It can not all be blamed on them having a larger budget.
There are loads of people on this site with very strong and forceful views; I guess you are in a minority of actually trying to implement change. Good on you.

I don't think this is the case. I think it's generally regarded that Labour are the more effective canvassers, probably because they have more members.

See e.g.
https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/141992/1/Hartman-Pattie%20-%20Spending%2C%20canv
'the percentage of respondents in each constituency contacted at home by Labour,
averaging 32 per cent in constituencies it was defending and 21 per cent where it came second in 2015; The Conservatives contacted many fewer respondents overall
(averaging 11 per cent in seats they were defending and 13 per cent in those Labour was defending)'

https://www.democraticaudit.com/2017/05/31/party-canvassers-dont-change-peoples-
'during the 2015 campaign: 40% were contacted by the Conservatives, 45% by Labour and 27% by the Liberal Democrats... Home visits during the election campaign were reported by 16% of those contacted by the Conservatives, 22% of those contacted by Labour..)

This isn't really what I said though.

My point is that I am not sure the majority of the general public are on board with these investigations at the moment and thus whilst they should be done I am not sure much will come of it due to other factors.

I hope I am wrong as they obviously need to answer for these things but I still feel more traction would likely be gained after the pandemic.

I have never in my life ever been knocked on by anyone.

I think I get more Labour leaflets through my door than any other.

In 1992 at the start of an election campaign I thought of a brilliant slogan for Labour to use and phoned their HQ to see if they wanted to purchase it. They advised that if I wasn't going to give it to them free of charge they didn't want it. They sounded like the committee from Vicar of Dibley

Needless to say Major sprung a surprise win - I believe with my slogan they could have won it!

I will explain it as the youngsters may not know that Britain used to be described as a nation of shopkeepers. My slogan was "Britain is a nation of bankrupt shop keepers"

What do you think? I reckon it's on par with Satchi and Satchi "Labour isn't working" campaign

The 'more traction' can only come about if there is something tangible to react to 'after the pandemic'.

Being found guilty of malpractice in office may well not lead to automatic resignations or a GE (nor am I expecting it to), but that is no reason not to vigorously pursue these actions.

And viewing how things currently stand we are much further than I thought we would be by now

I would further wonder at the coincidence of the BBC 2 programme Bent Coppers being run at this time. Cynics might suggest a retaliatory shot across certain 'righties' bows.

Funny ole world, innit ?

Once you find some actual sleaze and not just some wild accusations come back and tell us.

The only thing that's been proven to be wrong is the late announcement of a small number of tendered contracts. Even that was mostly ignored by the public who understood the unique circumstances.

I am sure that mistakes were made, contracts given to some who should never have got them, and money wasted. To insinuate that it's all some huge conservatives conspiracy to make money for themselves and their mates is based purely on political bias.

I bet you're spitting feathers that this isn't cutting through with the public!

When I lived in Ipswich, I think it was similar re leaflets.

Today I got my London mayoral booklet with all the candidates (well, almost all). It really does seem to attract some crackpots - and ones with money to spare as it costs £10k to get a spot in the publication. One of them has paid the money and hasn't even proofread his. The best candidate (crank-wise) is Brian Rose, who looks like a character from the Fast Show.

Actual sleaze Uriah asks

Fat boy trying to get donations for his flat treated as a charity

Handing out grants to a previous floozy

Trying to get tax exemptions for Dyson

Jenrick MP caught trying to fiddle planning regs

Cameron trying to get backdoor access to the Treasury and others for his 'clients

Cameron having officials have another job with Greensill

Matt Hancock having shares in a company winning government contracts - and then not declaring his sisters interest in that company

I shall spare you the pages of sleaze involved in Covid contracts as you appear to have already waded through them. And hopefully we won't have to wade through anymore of your absurd drivel on this matter.

I’m in Suffolk Coastal. Only ever get LD leaflets through the door (had three different sets for local elections this year already) but usually get both LD and Tories knocking on the door. For some reason one of my sons gets personally addressed letters from the Tories. He’s never voted so I’m not sure how/why.

It's surprising how people accept low standards from some MPs and how much they're prepared to overlook, all in the name of political tribalism. They're also prepared for their own money to be wasted, people in their own communities to be treated poorly and will even defend unnecessary deaths as we've seen in the pandemic. Despite maybe a trend in less corruption over long timescale, MPs would have been forced to resign in recent decades for less than some of the things were seeing now.

The lack of transparency is an issue in itself.

The second problem is say it’s not clutching at straws and there’s something in it you’ll still be an apologist for a dated class system, corruption, incompetence and lies.

not cutting through, eh ?

"The Greensill lobbying row is hurting Boris Johnson with voters ahead of crunch elections next month, a new poll suggests. "[/b}

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9504091/Poll-Lobbying-row-hurting-Boris

Overwhelming majorities of voters believe that action is needed to prevent cronyism in public contracts and limit the access of lobbyists to government ministers and officials, according to a new poll.

And the survey for The Independent found that 86 per cent of
voters believe that politicians who lie should lose office.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/sleaze-cronyism-lobbying-govenmen

Which begs the question of whether 'Hamish' is really so thick he cannot see what is happening, or that he knows he is blatantly lying on behalf of his betters.

If the latter, then that might explain the use of that particular log in.

Odd how many of the delicate petals should be so outraged by the word floozy in one thread, but not this time a day before.

Even more odd when you note how many of the 'complainants' actually posted in this thread, without the slightest of squeaks in that regard.

Of course, some might suggest that those whose views adhere to the thought that any questioning of language, and how it is used are 'woke', might be thought to be displaying a rather hypocritical stance on this occasion - perhaps through a need to distract from the post content per chance.

If some wish to see racism and misogyny behind the use of those words then so be it. Though I would hope that they might wonder at how they feel the right to criticize should only be the one way,

As to the bleat about Johnson's weight. Is that to be deemed 'fattist ?

As actually comparing his bloated form with my own, I would venture that his is actually the fattist.

Otherwise do have a good evening, one and all
