Oh I don’t know, maybe because he’s our best player and should be playing at least a level above. Maybe because he’s one of the few leaders we have and one of the only players capable of changing a game out of nothing? Maybe because he’s a local lad and he’s been selected consistently by four managers now and tipped for a move to the PL?

There’s a few to mull over...

Playing a level above lol , tell me when he has influenced a game in the third tier of English football

To be fair, I think this post would have been valid about 18 months ago but not based on anything that has happened since.

I'm sick of players that could be this and could be that... we have too many of them. We need players in the team who are at their best now.

Well we're getting rid of all of them then as none of them are at their best at the moment. The question Cook will be asking himself is does he feel any of them could return to their best under his leadership with a revitalised squad? Those are the ones he'll keep.

Downes is under contract anyway so he'll have another chance to prove he is good enough. Dozzell too.

But these players need to have really high competition for their places if they are going to snap out of the rut they are in.

At least a level above is a bit of a stretch. He would look OK in a bottom half championship side though so take your point.

More pertinently its worth remembering the players you want to keep are currently having their colleagues sh*t on buy the guy in charge. In fact, they're hardly being excluded from it themselves, are they? Wouldn't be surprised if Downes and KVY wanted out.

I'm not suggesting we shouldn't keep Downes but when was the last time he changed a game out of nothing?

He obviously has potential but he still has everything to prove as far as I am concerned.

“Influenced” is broad but I can point to countless games when Downes has been one of our best players in the pitch or we’ve looked a worse side without him. This season hasn’t been great for him with injuries and carrying Dozzell every single game but calling to get rid of him is one of the least sensible posts I’ve seen on here. Palace were in for him at the start of the season!!

He is 22, as is Dozzell nearly. Both have had to recover from serious injury and I wonder how much better they can get. With reasonable quality around them in a balanced team, coached and physically fit, significantly I’d suggest.

It depends on their attitude really. Wasn’t it rumoured Downes wanted out at the start of the season? The reality is that these people have to want to be here. If they don’t or are wavering, let them go.

Indeed. I think Downes could thrive with a better team around him next season, but frankly based on what I have witnessed this season I would not be upset at any member of this squad leaving. If they don't want to be part of the new era then move them on.

I'd say we have 9 spots to fill in a 4-2-3-1

KVY x x x
x Downes

Indeed. At a time when players are being criticised for their attitude as much as anything else, isn’t it a bit damming that our previously best player is wandering around the field looking uninterested and having zero impact on games. For some reason he’s getting excused for exhibiting exactly the same mentality that others are being crucified for. My view is that as one of the more capable players in the squad he’s probably more culpable than many of the others as his standard has fallen more.

I've been thinking exactly the same. Downes appeared totally disinterested yesterday and was just going through the motions. While it's expected of a lot of the other players who may know they're time is up, I found Downes' performance worrying.

We're in a period when the minority of players who have the right attitude and who there aren't enough of to make a side are having to play with players who don't want to play under Cook. Bound to affect the minority. Something we and Cook have to live with for 3 more games. Not long now.
