Could you dump Town and support another team? 14:31 - Apr 26 with 4204 viewsGeoffSentence

Here's an (8 year old) article by someone who switched teams because he didn't like what his previous club had become.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/when-saturday-comes-blog/2013/mar/14/footba

Has this crossed anyone's mind?

Impossible, sorry. No one who switches was ever a true fan. Change my mind

No.

It's Town. Town phoenix club if Town 'died'. General football fan.

Outside chance, I guess, of vaguely supporting a non league team but there will never be a connection like Town. That's why I don't support an NFL team. For me it has to compare to my connection with Town and it simply doesn't. I love NFL but unless it happens organically I can't pick a team.

Truly impaired.

No, following the Town is I’m reliably informed like chasing the Dragon, the highs are worth it for every bit of misery they have inflicted on us!

I've stopped following ITFC games since the Gillingham away match - well, I only check the full time result. This has lowered my stress levels a lot!

I couldn't NOT support Town.
A Man City supporting colleague quite supporting them when they first won the PL. He switched to Hyde FC as he didn't like the commercialisation of the club and the money involved. He'd been a ST holder for many years. I both understood it, and didn't.

Win or lose, learn.

In our case, we won't ever take the good times for granted and will learn to cherish every single win we have from this day forward.

Up or down. COYB.

You can't appreciate the good times if you've not had the bad ones.

I can understand those who do - but realistically along the following lines....

They support (generally a big club), they don't like what they have become, they just fall out of love

Or they move to an area and start following a local team, or a lower league team and just enjoy that more

Or a friend/relation plays for a team and they start following them

Ultimately you can't fake these things, and either the passion is there or it isn't.

When I was at uni I watched a lot of Southampton games as just couldn't get back to Ipswich and like watching live football......but even though I got involved and sat in their main end and enjoyed it I still remember buzzing when Darren Ambrose scored a late equaliser for Newcastle against them when I was in the So'ton end.....I gave up my ticket to a big game (maybe Liverpool) because we were playing Reading and a mate had managed to get us a lift up there.

I guess some people effectively having a season ticket at another club would see them following their results, but for me it was always Ipswich and I still say if I had a 2nd team it would be Southampton but I make no effort to watch or follow them and would struggle to name more than 5 players. Similar to my pretence of Ajax being my foreign team....!

It's Ipswich, Ipswich, Ipswich for me - and that will never change.

I made many visits to Portman road with a guy who is now a Chelsea supporter, I can barely talk to him anymore. Ipswich are my team through bad times and all the future bad times!

Nothing wrong with also supporting a non-league team. In fact I would argue its wrong not to support your local community team.

Quite often go and see Stowmarket and sometime Clapton CFC when visiting eldest child. Fun days out and helping the real grass roots.

I'm originally from Cambridge and went to Uni years ago in pompey so would look for results and follow those to a degree without supporting. But i remember when Mrs F asked me years ago around the time of the administration who i would support if ITFC went under and i said no-one, she was dumbfounded (although she is in the 'haven't got a clue or a care about footy' category tbf)

8 year old comes to mind with this. He needs to grow up. I will support Ipswich until I, or it, dies.

I'd you fall out love with your club the only option is to quietly go away and maybe watch a lower league side on the sly. Just like the catholics, you can't remarry.

Never.

So long as Town exist I will continue to support. It's how it works isn't it...

I can understand if one feels that something in the game has been lost and chooses to follow a non league team to try and get black to that but for me, I'm blue, I'm true, get used to it.

No.

I'm Ipswich born, but moved a long time ago to London then Kent for college then work. At no time in any of the intervening 50-plus years have I ever been anything other than a Town fan, regardless of which might be the local team for the time being. I might look favourably on the results of a few other teams, but could never support them instead Town.

I can't remember attending more than a handful of club games between other teams & was bored silly. The exception was the 1973 Sunderland v Leeds Cup Final, partly because dirty Leeds got beaten & partly because I was with a Mackem mate.

A friend once said that I'm a football fan, but I had to correct him, because I'm a Town fan. Deep down, I couldn't give a toss for any other team.

No, too emotionally invested. I was first taken to PR by my father in mid-70's to see Liverpool. I was at OT to see us beat Man U staying in the First Division and preventing them winning it. Left UK in 1992 but have followed Town while in US, Denmark Angola and China. Took a train 200 miles in Denmark to find somewhere to watch the playoff final. In North Carolina now, suffering through the Ifollow matches. One of the staff at my local YMCA remarkably has a Town shirt. I will time my visit to the UK next season so I can take in a game at PR hopefully with my father who is in his 80's and has developing Alzheimers, but we can still talk football !

Been supporting the club for over 58 years and through all the good and very bad at the moment in no way good I support another team. Happily married but my wife knows that Ipswich is my life, you just know that round the corner we will get better, and when that time comes the hangers on will be back.

My son got a lot of abuse on another forum for calling someone who changed clubs a 'plastic fan', but I really cannot get my head around following anyone else. I am berated daily by my kids for indoctrinating them into a lifetime of Ipswich Town matches, but they agree that no matter how hard it gets they cannot support someone else.....if you chop and change you are fan of football, not a fan of a football club.
