Scenes. Climbing the goal nets, smashing cameras, letting off flares. Quite extraordinary

Some background figures attached of just how much money Man U has spent on interest/loans over the past few years. That is the heart of the discontent, opportunist owners buying a football club with the prime objective of enriching themselves. In the case of the Glazers by borrowing the bulk of the purchase price and saddling the club with that debt.

Those rushing to condemn the fans might care to share exactly what 15 years of largely peaceful protest has achieved? From where I am sat, sfa.

Quite, the whole point is to make the Glazers uncomfortable, hopefully uncomfortable with what they've done over the years. Very easy to bat away people holding up signs deliberately made to go viral but another matter if they're, metaphorically, scraping up dirt and throwing it in your face.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I’m not sure that’s fair.

Yes, fans expect their team to spend enough to stay competitive (particularly at the level of Man Utd), but I don’t think they necessarily wanted the sky high transfers and wages that followed.

Fans always want their clubs to buy the best players. When there's no limit on that (edit: because of the money pouring in from TV deals), rampant inflation is the result.

It's not by any means entirely the fans' fault, but they have contributed.

Several ManU fans have been speaking on R5l for the last 20 mins or so condemning the action today & pointing out how much it damages their own cause. Not a single one was in favour (albeit small sample obvs).

That’s quite a stretch guthers. Fans always demand more from their owners, but to suggest that’s played any sort of role in the direction football has taken over the last thirty years isn’t right.

The requirement for more and more money has led to club ownership becoming limited to the very rich. A bunch of local landowners with a brewery wouldn't be able to run a decent level football club nowadays, certainly not at the upper end of the top tier.

Perhaps I'm being a little harsh, but the constant demand for spending on better players has certainly sustained fan support for the way football has gone far beyond where it ought to have stopped.

No different imho from those protesting on green issues or say fracking (One I know is close to your heart Ryorry). Standing around with a placard ultimately achieves sfa in most cases.

But by being bloody difficult, by forcing those with vested interests to take notice, by disrupting things, you just might get listened to. You just might get a change in attitude.

I am not going to condemn anyone (so long as people haven't been hurt) for taking hold of an issue and making sure their views are finally heard.

Completely disagree.

The owners that have the big clubs in this country do not pay a moments notice to their respective fan base. They focus purely on how to monetise their assets, players and trophies are one of the elements they need to factor in.

Fans demanding increased budgets has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with actual budgets.

They've actually damaged their own pitch. How can that ever be acceptable, particularly just before the k/o of one of the biggest fixtures of their season? The nearest comparison with fracking there would be protesters arranging for chemical spills into their own gardens just before a film tour showcasing their veg plots! And when antifracking, we learned time & time again that demonstrating illegally was counter-productive.

One of the fans to speak was one of their bloggers with a big readership. Others pointed out that in wanting a German-type ownership with fans having responsibiity for the running of the club to some extent, all that those 200 have shown is that some fans don't deserve it.

If you want to focus on a few fans who may have over stepped the mark that is your call. I am happier to focus on the larger issues of football governance / owners who have taken millions of pounds out of the game.

And those issues are only being talked about today due to the actions of those fans.

So despite the fact that fans have so wholeheartedly bought into the cause of the inflation, they get off scot free because their leverage at the top levels is small? If the fans had been protesting that it would ruin the sport back when the mega-spending was beginning - 20 or 30 years ago - would things have been allowed to go this far?

I've been listening to R5l for the past hour, not a single person has talked about those issues, only about the fans causing damage, with potential adverse consequences for both teams trying to fit in remainder of their fixture list, allowing fans back into ground, damage to pitch, damage to camera, bottles thrown etc.

A. Have they damaged their own pitch? Where? How?
B. How many individuals are responsible for this, even if they have?

Jamie Carragher is spot on. Nobody is justifying criminal damage, trespass etc, but let’s not let the actions of a small minority besmirch the peaceful actions of thousands who are clearly and rightly aggrieved with what the Glazers are doing to their club.

I fully support them going in with flares and more. Working class people have had their clubs stolen from them by some of the richest people in the world, backed up by the weight of the economic system and legal system. They are powerless to do anything effective through those channels and simply apologising and moving on from the ESL doesn't cut it.

Time for serious reform. Fans have become less and less important to the money men / tv schedules etc.

The big 6 demonstrated they dont give up a fck for our game, rather being driven by money. Enough is enough. And if they upset a few, well such is life.
