Anyone know about instruments? In particular a cello? on 17:18 - May 4 with 539 views | Keno | I don’t know much about Cellos but from dealings buying a brass instrument recently I would make a couple of comments The generic eBay stuff may not be very good quality, playable but the tone etc may not be brilliant. That’s why they seem so cheap. It would be looking at names of makers and seeing if you can get a better quality used one. Also the gear4 music one may not be full sized as it says student sized, so worth checking out. If you have a good music shop near you it might be worth having a chat with them Hope that helps

Cheers. I've done some research and student doesn't relate to size (that was my assumption too) student is for beginners and 4/4 means full size. The music shop ones are big money and I want to buy it as a gift for a hobby for someone that might not really use it. I'm worried about the ebay one being too cheap and therefore a bad buy but they look identical so I'm also concerned at wasting £100 extra for no reason. In a music shop they would be minimum of £600 but also run into thousands

Its a difficult call to know what to say on eBay quality but Gear4music do have an eBay listing https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/gear4music/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_f It may be worth scrolling through that and maybe email them an offer on the more expensive one I am surprised you haven't gone for this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274756943175?hash=item3ff8ca3d47:g:migAAOSwGxNgdUuL With regards to a local shop they have may know of people to sell good quality instruments and may also be open to offers [Post edited 4 May 2021 17:46]

The guy I went to for lessons said it sounded good and I also played with it in an amateur orchestra for a few years.

You'll always get a better instrument for the same money if you go secondhand though. I would personally ignore the likes of Gear4Music, who are local to me, but the sales guys really don't give a **** - and just call a small local shop up, most towns and cities have those which specialise in the more classical instruments, give them a budget, and ask for the best. Anything sub £200 with a cello is definitely a very beginners instrument, but like I said, shouldn't be a complete dog like it would have been years ago.
