Well I guess Kier Starmer should resign? 19:31 - May 7 with 5102 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Not been on here much (actually been working) so apologies if someone's said it already... but Labour have been destroyed in these local elections... even with all Boris's feck ups the public still trust the Tories over Kier's Labour.

He's done no better, or perhaps worse, than Corbyn would've done.

Maybe it's because Kier's perceived as a bit of a toff like the Tory lot. Or doesn't have any policies. He's been showing up Tory mismanagement for me, but it's obviously not cutting through to the public.

Labour should get Jess Philips in. Someone who would appeal to the north, and everyone, frankly.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Have you ever noticed how some of 'this lot' lay out their reasoning, backing their views with actual facts and relevant points.

They may not always agree with each other but at least they show their workings.

What does it tell you that you agree with some idiot who pops up from nowhere here and there offering nothing other than to take the odd daft pot-shot?

I just wrote a long post, lost it and can’t be bothered to write it again. It’s just re-hashing stuff I’ve already gone over repeatedly.

But in summary, Change UK typified the opposition Corbyn received after 2017 when the previous complaints about his ability to win votes were disproved. Then it became about disloyal briefings, antisemitism smears and dogmatic People’s Vote manoeuvres. That played unfortunately right into the hands of Tories who were looking to exploit Brexit divisions in an election.

Now we’ve got the same people with the same Change UK mentality trying the same stuff. Still playing into the Tories’ hands but with no-one else to blame but themselves. And their performance is in stark contrast to genuine social democrats/socialists who have outperformed them.

In a way I want them to keep going. They’ll purge themselves at this rate.

By genuine social democrats and socialists, do you mean Burnham and Drakeford?

Burnham typifies the ideal model - he has a reputation as a strong champion for his area and has established a reputation as a moderate, which gives him the public trust needed to implement left-wing policies. He'd be a great Labour leader.

Likewise with Drakeford, it isn't as simple as saying "he's a socialist" - I've walked miles campaigning for him the past month and the positive response on the doorstep was down to his handling of the virus, strong local incumbent candidates and a set of social democratic, costed policies - the Plaid manifesto was furthest left and they got nowhere. It's true that Drakeford's on the Labour left but I have no problem with that, I think he's great. He doesn't hang around with dodgy characters or share tweets from The Canary instead he's patriotic, competent, likeable and talks up past Labour achievements. I don't care what faction members are from as long as they do that.

Additionally, the reason Welsh Labour has done well is because it hasn't ceded patriotism and national identity to Plaid like it has to the Tories or the SNP. If you lived here, you'd probably call him a "flag shagger" as usual, but actually it's a case of championing good, left wing policies while showing the electorate that he is proud of Wales and Welsh difference. And yes, that did involve policy differences with the Blair/Brown governments in the early days. Conversely, the Tory leader spent the campaign talking about how he wanted Covid restrictions to align with England. The end result? The Tories won only 9 of the 14 seats they hold in Westminster - many of those seats are the same demographics as the "red wall" seats in England.

It's true that the UK Labour Party should communicate a better policy direction, something which is on Starmer, but it's not normal to put out a national manifesto before local elections, whereas for devolved and mayoral elections it does happen.

No one was asking for a manifesto. They were asking for a direction – and still are.

He of course could have used his leadership pledges ... if they weren’t something he just said to get elected leader and then almost immediately distanced himself from with every statement and deed.

But, yes, take leadership from what people like Burnham, Drakeford and others say and do.
