Anybody else hoping for some random overseas signings? 13:30 - May 10 with 4520 viewsSTYG

I'd be more than happy to add the likes of Verdaine Oliver, Callum Connolly, Wes Burns etc to the squad and am sure we will be looking at standout performers at this level or squad players from the division above, young enough to drop down and be stars.

But wouldn't it be great to just have some out of nowhere signings. Czech centre half. Dutch winger. The maestro at some Bundesliga 2 club that just missed out on promotion.

It would be a lovely sign that Cook, The Three Lions, Ashton between them have a proper scouting network in place ready to hit the ground running as these won't be Skard or Malarcyk type punts. Proper scouted players. You think Leicester got Mahrez for £400k and sold him for £60m.

There is an absolute wealth of players across Europe that would, even at a League One club, increase their wages, play for a bigger club, put themselves on the radar of bigger clubs here and could be huge stars at this level and the one above.

Would love it if we went down that route to a degree. Not a whole team at once. But a couple of carefully picked gems.

Wilnis still one of my favourite Town players.

I was just thinking* about him, funnily enough. Was he the last Dutchy we had? Can't recall any others after.

*Nothing more.

Not too concerned about us signing a Czech centre half to be fair. I just want us to sign good footballers, I don't care where they're from.

That said, some rogue South American with a name like Rodriguez, a complete unknown quantity brings with it the potential that he'll be great. When you sign a 29 year old from L1 who you've seen many times you kind of know what you're going to get.

Strength. Ability to hold the line. Gets in the box as often as possible. Solid heading attributes. Reminds me of Hawkins but more agile.

Hes clearly not a star otherwise he would be playing higher than league 1. But I think people need to be realistic of where we are as a club right now.

It's one thing wanting to see a championship ready squad being made but I dont see that as realistic throughout the squad.

Can I ask how many times you've seen him play?

Just looked and it seems Fab and Rolls Reuser were indeed our last, departing in '03.

Christ, it's been a rough couple of decades.

A fair bit. More so when at Northampton tbh than at gillingham this season.

World beater no
But again if Norwood is going to be no.1 Oliver will be a solid no.2

All depends on where PC goes shopping.

I would hope we'd sign at least another number one striker. Can never have too many goalscorers.

Fair enough.

So he scored 4 goals in 30 appearances for Northampton. Did you think he was a decent option at that point or just based on this season?

I think we will have to disagree on this one, the evidence suggests he's a fairly poor lower league striker who has had one semi-decent season.

This is it. I get the feeling Gamechangers aren't here to take pointless chances. This isn't the Evans era where we have a team of punts and pray for a miracle. If they genuinely want to get us up as quickly as possible they'll be going for as close to sure things as we can get on whatever budget we have.

Just felt there was something there. Again I'm not saying hes on par with a championship striker or anything but with the right attacking set up he could be very handy. This season has shown that the step up and better players around him resulted in a better goal return.

For me. Hes a prime example of a player who could and probably should have done more with his footballing career. He will finish it strongly imo. Just a shame for him he didnt push through a few years ago. The ability is there but time is not on his side now.

I think too many of our fans have been beaten down over such a long period of time that now they can dare only dream of averageness. I understand our new owners are setting their sights somewhat higher, and we can afford to cautiously up our expectations somewhat.

Whilst I agree. I can see the wide areas. Central midfield and full back areas being where the money is spent
Norwood with fitness is the goal scorer we need and already have. It's a solid back up needed. But it's difficult to have 2 quality strikers when only 1 place available imo.

Who realistically do you see us getting

If we are as ambitious as the owners claim to be and willing to pay fees then there will be plenty of options. We are apparently looking to recruit from the best pool possible so I would expect someone with more calibre than Norwood to come in to provide competition as the leading striker.

If we are talking frees, could we get Ashley Fletcher/Waghorn? Maybe not, but that's where we need to be setting our stall to begin with.

Indeed. Both him and Garner were treated like the coups they were - certainly on here, and very shrewd by MM.

Agreed. We need at least two fullbacks, a centre back, a ball-winning CM, a left winger, a right winger (that lad from Crewe looks the business) and another striker who can actually score goals. And a reliable keeper

But you said he suits a 4 2 3 1, how does he suit that?

(It's a genuine question, I can't see how he does, so interested to know what makes you confident he suits that role.)
[Post edited 10 May 2021 14:02]

I thought he was playing as one of the wide forwards for Gillingham, rather than the central striker, so he's providing a goal threat from a wide position, which is what we've lacked for ages (apart from Edwards in the first few weeks of the season).

Not saying we should sign him because of his age and the fact that he's only one good season, but he's the type.

I'd say for the first eleven we need to add a more creative, composed attacking player (a Jordan Graham / Charlie Kirk type), a pacy wide goal threat like Oliver but better, and then a Pigott type centre-forward to compete with Norwood. Callum Connolly in to replace Downes (assuming he leaves), and then a top notch centre-back and an attacking left-back.

Oh, and a goalie.
