This.

Any move to Championship, or a stretch the PL is going to mean a huge pay rise which we wouldn't and couldn't match

And which we don’t have to match, because he’s signed a contract. So unless someone comes up with an acceptable fee he isn’t going anywhere

But we're being invested in as a League 1 side and a turnaround for us constitutes a genuine promotion challenge to get out of the third tier. Why would he want that when he could walk into a number of Championship sides next year and earn more money to boot? He's not a Town fan, and even if he was staying with us isn't sensible if a Championship or Prem side is genuinely interested in signing him.

In fairness to Evans he would always back his manager if he wanted to keep a player in the face of a good offer a la Mcgoldrick to Leicester and Mings & Downes to Palace. Be interesting to see how these new owners do things.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Quite. I just don't see how he leaves - we are in an even better position now in terms of 'having' to sell him and can't see a queue of clubs lining up to pay us a decent fee.

In theory yes, but sadly it doesn't seem to work that way.

His agent will be told of the deal on offer and he'll agitate for a move away.

Might find it tricky to get one. Hasn't done enough to get a move to the PL and I imagine spending will be down in the Championship.

If a Prem side is genuinely interested in him then I agree, it’s a no-brainer for him.

However, our new owners have made clear that their ambitions extend a lot further than simply getting out of League One. It’s not inconceivable that that could happen next year, and that with the right investment a good season in the Championship could follow (and who knows after that).

Downes could be a part of all that - more than just a part of it, he could be integral to it (quite possibly captain). I just wonder if a short term decision to get to the Championship a little quicker could lead to him missing out on some real long term dividends.

Up to him of course. And if he wants out Ashton will hopefully get a decent price for him, we’ll reinvest and move on.

I'm pretty sure his stance won't have changed. We're still league 1 and he could be doing better, im sure he'll be moving on this summer for the right fee. Will be a shame

He didn’t rip up div1 but was that because he was 1/2 sulking?

Let him go, Ashton will make sure we get plenty of cash.

Ashton's annual salary will probably amount to most of what we'll get for Downes.

Like he did last summer. We didn't sell.

Our best case scenario is that 2 years from now we've done okay in the Championship following promotion. That really is best case as well, there's no guarantee we'll even be out of League 1 by then. Downes is young but he's played 100+ games for us now and football is a short career. Why wait 2 years in the hope that we may have consolidated ourselves in the Championship when he could move to an established Championship side now? If you take the emotion out of it, it makes no sense to stay with us if there is genuine interest.

Depends who would sign him at the end of the day, and what his relationship is like with Cook - ITFC may be about to bumble through another year in League One, with Downes dropped for Cook's old players Evans / Connolly etc.

Ha! I guess he did miss a lot of games this year and last season was cut short. Still, he's been a regular here when fit for 3 years now which is a decent chunk of time.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see a mid table Championship club like Luton put in a cheeky offer now that they’ve got a season in that league under their belts. Especially with his loan history there.

We’d all assume that Cook wants to keep Downes, but given how vocal he was about letting people go who clearly don’t want to be here, Downes could be one of those who’s made it known that he wants out. Cook has already said he thinks players should view it as a privilege to play for us so if he’s not on that page (whether due to career aspirations or money) I’d imagine he’d rather he go.

If Downes wants away, fine let’s face it, we are where we are. Established League One. A move to Luton, Peterborough, Coventry, Brentford etc is a massive step up for him.

As far as ITFC is concerned, if he wants away then move him on ASAP, preferably for a fee and definitely with a sell on fee..Go Ashton! We surely want people here that want to be here. We’ve had too many that have used it as a place to get fit for a proper club, pension provider or place to ease their way down through a mediocre career etc.

I wouldn't say any of those clubs are a massive step up for him. Crystal Palace was a massive step up.

If we were in Luton’s position and looking for a player from Accrington or Gillingham, 2 pointes poorer than Ipswich, I’d view it as a massive step up for that player. Shrewsbury played in the play off final in 2018 and we took their manager and two of their better players. What did they achieve? That’s why I think it’s a challenge for Downes.

But he's played 40 odd games in the Championship already and held his own, so I don't see it as a massive step up for him.

Indeed. Downes has played Championship football and looked more than capable at that level. The likes of Luton or Peterborough are also very unlikely to be much of a step up financially as well as from a footballing perspective. If he goes to a Championship side it'll be to a well-resourced and well-established one.

Like he did last summer. We didn't sell.

Maybe with the promise of doing so this year if we didn’t go up?

I can’t see him staying, but also can’t see him any higher than a mid-table Championship team for now. Is that worth leaving for?
