"Every year, commemorating the Nakba represents a kind of mental struggle to remember the past and sustain the hope that it can be overcome — by ensuring that Palestinian refugees and their descendants can return home. In my own community, by contrast, Jewish leaders in Israel and the diaspora demand that Palestinians forget the past and move on. In 2011, Israel’s parliament passed a law that could deny government funds to any institution that commemorates the Nakba. Israeli teachers who mention it in their classes have been reprimanded by Israel’s Ministry of Education. "

Why is dreaming of return laudable for Jews but pathological for Palestinians?

Cheers for that.

Beinart is excellent. And a rare commentator on Israel-Palestine issue who is motivated by honesty, pragmatism and, ultimately, respect for human life and the millions of ordinary people on both sides who deserve better.

His move to a one-state solution that provides a home for both Jews and Palestinians is compelling, not least because it addresses the reality that Israel’s far-right government and hardcore settlers have destroyed the prospect of a viable Palestinian state. Egged on by Trump and quietly backed by our own UK government and politicians.

This is a good read where he sums up that one-state argument.

Seems to be the only viable path now!
