He did split up with the girlfriend, though.

While there is undoubtably an element of bloc voting and political voting, it is not the main reason we consistantly come last. This year's top 3 of Italy, France and Switzerland are not in voter blocs. Italy and France are part of the big 5, so lack of semi-final participation did not hinder them. Germany have also won fairly recently. Israel managed to get 93 points, despite having no bloc votes and being in the news for negative reasons in the past week. Our problems are: * We put in rubbish acts. James Newman couldn't sing the song. * We don't make any effort with staging. We had a couple of static props. * No interesting video screen. No pyro. No unusual dancing. No costume changes. * We almost always put in a generic pop ballad. Other musical genres tend to do fairly well. A rock act won this year, with a metal act also scoring well. France came second with a chanson. * We don't market our track well in mainland Europe before the competition. Our best performance in recent memory was Jade Ewen / Andrew Lloyd Webber, which came 5th in 2009. Jade could actually sing. The song was more musical theatre than pop, so stood out. ALW did a lot of marketing and performing the song around Europe before the contest.

93 points behind Israel on 00:12 - May 23 by Cheltenham_Blue | It’s always been political. The Uk haven’t done well since Katrina and the Waves, and even then it was political. |
At the risk of posting a boring response, it is nowhere near as political as it used to be. There is still a lot of regional bias and a bit of politics obviously - but the return of jury points in recent years have actually turned it into a semi serious singing competition. Which makes it dull and you are left relying on the public vote to mix it up. And unhelpful when the UK enter a nice bloke who can’t sing.

But, does anyone really care if the UK come first or last in a meaningless song "contest". A dreadful relic of the 1960s, when most people sang similar ballads - now, there are so many different musical genres that the notion of a sensible contest is ridiculous. Still, I haven't watched it for umpteen years & I suppose it's a bit of harmless fun, although the BBC (i.e. you & me) contributes about £300,000 each year to help cover the cost.

93 points behind Israel on 00:14 - May 23 by The_Flashing_Smile | There's no way the UK song was the worst out of that lot, and the only one deserving of zero points from both the juries AND the public. Of course it's political. |
I though ours was by far the worst - particularly as it seemed he sang out of tune in bits of it. The only one nearly as bad as ours was Germany's bizarre effort, which at least was sung properly.

The song itself wasn’t the absolute worst (being generous), but everything else about it was poor. It could have maybe been salvaged if it’s performer had channeled a bit more ‘Sam and the Womp’ and a little less ‘bloke from the Beagle Street ad.’

93 points behind Israel on 11:19 - May 23 by pointofblue | That’s why Germany, The Netherlands and Spain also got no points from the public - they should have never left the EU. We came last because our sing was bland, forgettable, had horrific staging and the tuning was off. If anyone on here could have voted for it over every other song would you have done? It was there, it was performed, it went. It was pointless in more ways than one and that’s why we got the result we did; nothing to do with politics. |
"NOTHING to do with politics." LOL. The UK does terrible virtually EVERY year. It's not the first time we've got zero points.

I agree we hadn't bothered with much staging, and he did look like a fat bloke doing karaoke, but it still deserved at least ONE frigging point! If you simply switched the nation from "UK" to any of the others it would've got a few points. We've been hated for so long we don't even bother making an effort anymore.

The moment he half turned and gave that sideways smile into the camera, I assumed he was taking the piss. Most of the acts nowadays are satirical aren't they. Aren't they?

93 points behind Israel on 00:29 - May 23 by Cheltenham_Blue | Well, no, the song certainly didn’t hit any highs. But it sure as sh it wasn’t a Nil. We did used to have big events to choose our song. Wogan hosted them, but it became clear the public couldn’t be trusted and those songs did worse than the juried ones. No one considered that Europe might be starting to not like us very much. |
Never mind the rest of Europe. Have you seen the way this country is going? I don't like us very much.
